I came to Crown Heights in 1976 and I heard about this horrible story.
However unfortunately something is missing.
The version I heard the rabbi was walking on Montgomery towards Schenectady avenue from Troy avenue carrying a decorated Teffillin bag.
A male Black snatched it from him, probably thinking there were diamonds in it.
The rabbi was not afraid, and ran after him.

I lived on the block at the time

The article is correct. He was walking towards Albany.
The rabbi didn’t run after him.

On Daled Cheshvan, 5740 (October 25, 1979): Reb Dovid [Ramener] Okunov lived on Crown Street and was walking towards 770 Montgomery Street, on his way to Mikvah and Shachris between 6 and 7 AM. The great irony is that he risked his life, from a very young age of 12 (leaving his parents home to study in Tomchei Temimim) in 1924 throughout the 1930’s, 1940’s, 1950’s, until he merited to finally leave the Soviet Union in 1967, only to be murdered in the free land of the United States of America.
