The Rebbe may have been against an Eiruv.
The Rebbe was definitely against our Rabonim fighting openly with each other.
For sure.

June 20, 2016 11:16 pm

I grew up in Monsey, and hardly anyone uses the eruv there. The children play in their backyards, while the mothers enjoy some peace and quiet inside. It is actually pretty rare to see a stroller out, because it is prohibited to push it over grass. The up and coming neighborhood of Pomona does not have an eruv yet, and people are still moving there in droves. There are plenty of opportunities for women to go out on Shabbos, without an eruv being around Crown Heights. Eastern Parkway is always full of married women walking, on Shabbos afternoons. Just because… Read more »

I have been living in CH for decades and Crown Heights has changed a lot since the Rebbi was here, and everyone is talking about the eruv being up and there are more important things going on in CH then someone putting up an eruv, that could prevent someone from carrying on Shabbos, get a life and stop talking about taking it down,

June 20, 2016 5:57 pm

you know that we are ruining the eruv so if you deicde to carry its your problem that you get the aveira not ours

It may surprise people
June 19, 2016 11:52 pm

But not all who live in the area are Lubavitch. And for Jews who want affordable housing, kosher stores and a shul for shabbos, an eruv is a must. For most Shabbos is about community, and not locking women up at home with babies and nowhere to go or still shlepping to your mothers house. Plus, these people can actually sustain a community here as prices go up its doubtful many Lubavitchers will be able to afford to stay.

June 19, 2016 8:02 pm

The eruv is not for everyone If you are not happy with the eruv being up, just don’t use it, but there are some people that are happy with it being put up,

from Rabbi Heller
June 19, 2016 5:41 pm

Rabbi Heller just addressed the eiruv issue in kolel and asked to share his words. The following was written up by one of the people in attendance. 1. Eiruvin is from the three most difficult sugiyos in halacha. To make an eiruv in a city (which is a different ballgame then a bungalow colony etc). Is extremely complicated, there are only יחידים in our dor that know how to do it properly. It’s like a heart surgery, you cant just be a regular dr. you have to be a regular dr plus specialise in hearts… He said its actually harder… Read more »

One good news…the Crown Heights Rebbeim agree on something …I guess this is what it takes to unite us…?

June 19, 2016 11:04 am

people are misreading the boundries of the eiru from the map and are under the assumption that the greater CH are is under Eiruv and were carrying on shabbos

this is horrible

@146 calm down
June 19, 2016 10:55 am

I think the reason why people are going nuts and not calming down, is because they can only feel at ease with themselves when they are putting others down. I think it’s clear that the Eiruv is not being organised by the Chabad community and is therefore not intended to serve the needs of the Chabad community. If that’s the case, why the uproar? Because machlokes is fun! Divisiveness makes me look frummer! If I become more tolerant and accepting of other expressions of Orthodox Judaism, I might lose my connection with Chabad because it is so, so strong. We… Read more »

What has happened to US Chabad Chassidim!!!!! 🙁

June 19, 2016 1:31 am

Imagine if this was a new CH restaurant that will be opened on shabbos and a mystery rabbi/hechsher is claimed to give it a heter mechira

what will the gentiles say?
June 19, 2016 12:42 am

Honoring tradition, obeying the great leaders of the recent past, and modest dress and behavior earns the respect of our neighbors and helps them to resist the demagogues who call for violence.

How can you trust an item that needs a hechsher without knowing the Rov?
June 18, 2016 11:46 pm

Would you eat in a restaurant without the Hechsher on display?
Would you buy a Sefer Torah from Walmart?

In order to be able to use the Eruv, you have to know if it really is a kosher eruv, or if this is just a ploy to divide us, without there really being an eruv up.

My heart goes out to all of you
June 18, 2016 11:21 pm

My heart literally goes out to all of you that have nothing better to do but to sit on col and write these comments
I think it’s a bigger problem that you all have no life than the machlokes about the Eruv
Go and get a life!

Hope you all grow up and find a purpose in your life

Nothing to do with Chabad
June 17, 2016 8:14 pm

All the comments with people pig bananas are ridiculous because this has ZERO to do with Chabad. In fact other non-Lubavitch Jews were there first. Be respectful and decent. Everyone knows that Chabad won’t use it, so don’t! Non-Lubavitch Jew don’t need permission of Chabad to conduct their own Judaism. Speak for yourself! I as a Sepharadi Jew do it use these strings on posts. We don’t jump up and down and have a fit when other Jews do.

Its time to make the jump, either move out of the CH Lubavich community to Tribeca or anywhere else and you will not have to live with the constant reminder and family embarrassment when you cut your beard, or your wife walks around with pants or worse etc. kids going to public school. or return to your roots and join the community… Read more »

The eruv is pusul, because Rabbi Schwartz no longer endorses it.

June 17, 2016 6:47 pm

It’s about time Crown Heights had an eruv!

June 17, 2016 6:42 pm

The people of Prospect Heights had no right to put up an eruv, in a neighborhood they do not live in.

Also by ripping it down you think you are so smart and mighty but anyone that will carry will be mechalel Shabbos in your name. So how smart will you be then?

Who is frum and who is not.
Who is a chossid and who is not
Who cares about the Torah and mitzvos.
And those who don’t will use the eiruv and violate shabbos cv”s..
Just like they violate the laws af kashrus (cholov AKUM) and taharas mishpacha (lack of kosher clothing and intermingling).
You have been warned. The eruv will be torn down. Don’t use it.
May Hashem have mercy on the fools and bring them back too the ways of Torah.

June 17, 2016 5:50 pm

YOU ARE LUBAVITCHER SHLUCHIM. You’re supposed to bring other Jews closer! I think an eruv is an excellent idea. You’re preventing those who carry on shabbbat to carry and break shabbat! Even if they don’t keep shabbat or whatever, you’re still helping them with one aspect! Just because there is an eruv, there is no need to feel threatened. Just don’t use it. Don’t be jerks about it. And the rebbe would probably allow one in this day and age.

That’s a dum conclusion, the rebbe was not against putting it up, so just because it was publicized, that doesn’t make sense to take down, and that’s not what the rebbe wanted.. So use your head and think how it’s going to make things better through taking it down, you will realize how stupid it it to take down, making people carry, are you taking the responsibility of those carrying..?

It is not for the chabad community
June 17, 2016 5:32 pm

But it is also not for the crown heights community since the ch beis din is against. It is only for people from prospect heights since they put it up, not any ch shul

The point is that they are being Michalel shabbis
June 17, 2016 5:27 pm

Regardless whether it’s torn or not: it’s the same. They are both not allowed.

June 17, 2016 4:58 pm

The Airuv was not built for the Lubavitcher’s of crown heights, period! So why are ppl getting all crazy and worked up? If you wanna use it, that’s your own deal. And those that plan on ripping it down, that’s a real chilul lubavitch and you will cause other yidden to be michalel shabbos.

June 17, 2016 4:36 pm

As far as I remember the rebbe said not to publicize that there is a eiruv, but the rebbe didn’t say a thing about putting it up.
So all those עמרצים, do some research before taking down the eiruv

Sounds more like the Rebbe's camp :) then the Rebbe's Shechunah
June 17, 2016 4:33 pm
It's not the chabad community
June 17, 2016 4:32 pm

There are other people who have a right to live where ever they want and they chose to put up an eruv . It’s not chabad members and they don’t follow our dinim. We don’t have to accept their eruv and use it. Let them live. That’s true Ahavas Yisroel, tolerance.

Calm down
June 17, 2016 4:25 pm

We live out of new York and there is an eruv but we don’t use it. Our kids don’t use it. We don’t own crown heights. Why can’t you live peacefully and let people who aren’t chabad make an eruv and use it if they want. Chabad members shouldn’t use it. It’s up to us to hold our standards and not carry, just like we do out of town. Our children know that we don’t use the eruv but those who hold by it can.

June 17, 2016 4:20 pm

Its not even in the Crown Heights shcuna!
Anyone who lives out there and decides to use it, that is on your own head.
Lubavitch as a group does not rely on an eruv. If one does decide to use it, please do it at your own discretion.
Further more if you plan on using it, it would be appreciated if you made it very clear you are doing it on your own and not as a Lubavitcher.
thank you
some who is proud to be called a Lubavitcher and live up to its standards.

Missing the point
June 17, 2016 4:17 pm

Most of the people are missing the point that the zechoi of the pas doesn’t help which is the real meaning of Eiruv mixing the food, because of those that oppose it even if the mechitzsos would be good

I wouldn't use the erev
June 17, 2016 4:17 pm

This is an ERUV for BROOKLYN people and people in CH who want to us it like the SHABBAS ELEVATOR we have here on Crown St

Ahavas yisroel
June 17, 2016 4:13 pm

It doesn’t mean ahavas haeruv. It is ok to say the eruv is a bad idea and to tell people not to use it. But if you see someone using the eruv using and she says oh I am not chabad, I belong to that other shul which holds it is ok then that’s it, don’t bother her

To all those saying, the rebbe was against it!
June 17, 2016 4:07 pm

Please find me one good source that the rebbe said it’s not something we should do.
Till then I think this eiruv is a very good thing and it will help so many people..

Seriously?? Give me a break!!!
June 17, 2016 4:03 pm

Why are people making such a big deal out of this eiruv, at least someone is doing something.. Whoever wants to take it down doesn’t really want to make things better, rather make problems. Are you trying to help the situation? Well this way will definitely not help. And trying to blame it on the rebbe, the rebbe would definitely not want you to go take it down, it’s not the derech of the rebbe to do things by force, the rebbe would maybe tell you to go speak with the one that put it up, but to go cut… Read more »

American law may say that a person has the freedom to do what he wants, but Halacha gives the power to the Rabbanim to “dictate” and control how the community lives and to excommunicate those who dont follow. People are able to choose which community they live in. But once they choose the community, the are bound to live by the community rules. For those that are worried about the rebbes approach to ahavas yisroel. If you want to say that the Rebbe was against Machlokes then The Rebbe was against Machlakos and therefore against starting things that cause Machlokes. For example, putting up an eiruv that the majority of people disagree with. That would be starting machlokes. But in reality, having ahavas yisroel did not stop the Rebbe from fighting and storming and screaming about shleimus haaretz and mi hu yehudi and many other things. Well, that Shul wouldn’t have been here if not for our Bachurim who kept up the Shabbis and yom Tov Minyanim for decades! In dust, in freezing cold, in scirtching heat, the Bachurim were always there! The conflict they have with Rabbi Kurshenbaum can’t erase that historical factor. So many people on hear professing to know what the rebbe wanted. I can assure you one thing the rebbe did NOT want machlokes! look what is happening here on erev shabbos when we should be helping our wifes out! not on our cellphone arguing. Live and let live. If you dont want to use it dont but lets not be our own enemy and create sinas chinum

The Crown Heights Beis DIn is not the Crown Heights Lubavitch Beis Din.
June 17, 2016 2:10 pm

In gimmel tamuz 5746 Rabbi Eliezer Zirkind wrote to the Rebbe that the elected Crown Heights Beis Din will be called
“בי”ד רבני ליובאוויטש – קראון הייטס”
The Rebbe wrote sharply against this proposed name and wrote:
פירוש הצעתם – על פי שולחן ערוך – שכל אלה שבשכונה ואינם ליובאוויטש יבחרו רבנים ובית דין וכו’.

The Rebbe foresaw these things coming and insured that the elected Beis Din is to be called the “Crown Heights Beis Din” period, for all those who live in Crown Heights.

We will put cameras and catch the perps, we will go after thise who will rip it down with the full extant of the law. You have won the battle for this Shabbos but the Law os on our side, we will win the eruv war.

So now we know.

Who are you to decide what halachically exists? You can say the Rebbe is against it and this Eruv does not follow the Alter Rebbe’s shita, and I would agree. However, to say that there is no halachic premise for this Eruv, is foolish. You, my friend, are a part of the problem. Shame on you! If anyone should walk down the street ashamed, it should be those who favor damaging the Eruv.

June 17, 2016 1:47 pm

Exactly how are you a chabad chossid if you are going against a clear psak of the local beis din?

Breaking the Eruv does not cause Jews to be M’chalel Shabbos since the Eruv does not halachically exist at all.
The only effect of breaking the eruv is so that people who think they have a shita to rely on, do not have the physical eruv to carry out their Shita.

The person who sets up the eruv is causing chillul shabbos, and the person who destroys it is preventing chillul shabbos.

Good Job Finally!!!!!!
June 17, 2016 1:40 pm

I’m a chabbad chossid who agrees with this Erev.
Good job to whoever was envolved!!!!

June 17, 2016 1:37 pm

For the record: When setting up the beis din, the Rebbe insisted that it not be a CHABAD beis din.

He insisted that the elections be open to EVERY single JEWISH member of the Crown Hights community!  This way – al pi torah/halacha – the Beis Din has jurisdiction over the ENTIRE community! – not just a specific shul(s).

For members of the community to seek outside “rabbonim” to OVERIDE the UNANIMOUS opinion of Crown Heights RABBONIM – is clearly against, mentclichkeit, yosher, Torah and Hashem!

I do not agree with this Eruv at all. But I do know that whoever damages or is an accessory to the damaging of this Eruv is worse then an animal (Yitosh kodmoch). You are causing Jews (Chabad or not) who are relying on this Eruv, to be mechalel shabbos. The fact that you think you are doing it for good cause, makes you a bigger idiot. SHAME ON YOU!!!

Is it only according to the Alter Rebbe?

Which Halachic authority would say that an Eruv which is opposed by ALL local Rabbonim may be used? If I am not mistaken, you would not find one serious halachich authority that will say that one may use an Eruv which is opposed by local Rabbonim.

This goes beyond the technicalities of an Eruv, it goes into basic Halacha principles of authority of Rabbonim.
