Twenty years ago, who would have thought that we’d one day be reporting a comeback of the east side of Crown Heights?
But baruch Hashem that’s what’s happening.
And we’re not talking about the fact that homes on that side of town are selling for 1.3 million dollars; although that’s also true. We’re talking about the vibrant Chabad community.
The K’hal Chassidim shul, also known as “Baumgarten’s Shul” at 1612 Carroll Street, corner of Schenectady, has recently renovated the entire shul and promises to be a center for community and Torah study.
A major portion of the funds came through the efforts of Mr. Steve Finkelstein, a top-rated Estate & Trust Litigation Attorney in New York.
The Baumgarten family has been davening there for years, as well as the Rebbe’s Mazkir, Rabbi Leibel Groner. The shul has been home to many of the older generation of baalei teshuva.
But Yakir Malka, one of the gabboim, says “there’s a whole new, young crowd on this side of town, and we’re happy that they feel comfortable in shul.”
The board of the shul has plans to add a children’s program on Shabbos in the near future. For now, as the shabbosim are getting longer, they are holding weekly shiurim for Shabbos afternoon.
This is in addition to the daily morning Chassidus shiur given by Rabbi Mordechai Lipskier, a member of the shul. Rabbi Lipskier also presents a class titled “a smorgasbord on the parsha” on Friday nights before kabolas Shabbos.
This shul is B”H really shaping up b’gashmius u’v’ruchnius. I’d like to suggest replacing the tablecloths that need to be ironed every time they’re washed with wrinkle-free tablecloths. This addition to the new look would definitely be noticeable and offers great bang for the buck. (The same applies to other shtieblach in our shchunah as well.)
Yishar koach gadol for the time, effort and money that Yakir Malka put into the shul! without him this could never have become a reality! We are looking forward to see the complete product! May Hashem bless him with strength to continue to do great things!
also happy about the heterogeneous mix of ages etc.described in the article. it’s always nice when a community institution serves a broad spectrum of the community, not just one particular group or another.
p.s. the pictures of the renovated shul look great. thank you, Mr. Steve Finkelties and all the others who made the renovation possible.
The 7 Am Shacharis minyan is unique in Crown Heights. It is NOT a speedy rush minyan but a welcoming and comfortable minyan where all can join without feeling left out. We are also planning on a daily Kollel, in the near future, iy”H. everyone is welcome every day. Shacharis 7 am and 8:15 Mincha & Maariv at daily times printed schedules and daily reminders via whatsapp are also available. donations may be mad via paypal at Paypal.me/1612. Have a wonderful day and a kosher & freilichen Pesach
