The long-awaited boys Chidon Shabbaton began yesterday. “After counting down for months, the chayolim are finally here,” says director Rabbi Sholom Loebenstein. “They’ve earned each and every exciting thing that is planned for them—and there’s a lot!”
Chayolim started their day with a grand welcome in Oholei Torah. They met their counselors and bunk mates and were gifted with this year’s Chidon sweater. “I can’t wait to make new friends,” one contestant from the Florida Keys said when he picked up his ID tag. Boys traveled from all over the world—as far as Sweden, Turkey, and Denmark—to join the Shabbaton.
After a satisfying breakfast, students took the final test, the determining factor of who will win the gold, silver, and bronze medals. “I’m proud of all the hard work, even if I don’t win,” says finalist Chaim Kaplan.
This year the Chidon’s older division of grades six, seven, and eight were treated to extra special privileges.
These grades boarded charter buses and rode away—to Split Rock Resort, where they went snow tubing and to an indoor water park. The lucky older division will spend the night in the hotel before returning to Crown Heights tomorrow afternoon.
