Proceed to The Lubavitcher Rebbe Way.
That’s a navigation notice that drivers may soon hear when driving into President Street, between Brooklyn and New York Avenues, in the Crown Heights neighborhood.
That street block is home to 1304 President Street, where the Rebbe and Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka Schneerson, of blessed memory, lived in a single-family 3-story house since 1955.
The initiative is being supported by New York City Council Member Crystal Hudson, a Democrat who represents the 35th district, which covers parts of central Brooklyn.
“Yesterday, we remembered the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Menachem Mendel Schneerson, on what was the 30th Anniversary of his passing,” she wrote on X.
Hudson said she is working with the Chabad-Lubavitch community and Brooklyn Community Board 9 to co-name that block in honor of the 30th Gimmel Tammuz.
Community activist Yaacov Behrman of the Jewish Future Alliance has been working with Hudson on the plan. He said it would pay tribute to the Rebbe’s impact on the community and world at large.
“Since the 1950s, this street was home to the Rebbe, and his residence, preserved exactly as it was during his lifetime, remains a place of significant religious importance,” he wrote in the proposal.
To have it approved, it will go through a vote in the Community Board 9 and then the City Council, a few months long process. Mayor Eric Adams would then sign it into law.
I think Crystal Hudson is trying to make up for the fact that she did the ceasefire thing with Israel. So now she is like I know how to win their hearts back and get them to vote for me again I will name a street after the Lubavitcher Rebbe. She is a smart politician.
Welcome to most of humanity.
Why don’t we focus on the real issues.
Maybe let’s get the massive Clarkson development cancelled in honor of the rebbe, who cares so much for the shchuna.
She can’t focus on what matters bc those pulling her strings don’t let
She knows they will put her under investigation like Eric Adams, the minute she steps out of line
Politicians name streets. End.
Normal human beings are left to worry about and do the jobs that the higher ups are supposedly meant to care about and do.
Sad fact.
King Messiah Street. Or keep the name PRESIDENT Street
What’s the point?
I don’t know why this didn’t happen years ago. How many other streets are named after non-Jewish activists??
This small block consists of only lubavitch residents. There should be no one to object!
This is a good thing and has nothing to do with the above. Council Member Hudson is not beholden to anyone and lets just give her credit for doing a nice thing that she is recognizing the importance of the Rebbe and doing this special recognition to honor his greatness,
Kudos to Mr Berman for working with her on this project.
Thank you to Council Member Hudson for this!
There’s no reason for a small residential street to have the Rebbe’s name.
If we’re going to the effort, it should be a major thoroughfare –
Without a doubt, the Rebbe turned Eastern Parkway (through address 770 Eastern Parkway) into a globally known address.
The Parkway needs to be the street that gets the name.
