A couple who had a British rabbi circumcise their baby boy has been found guilty of conspiracy to commit bodily harm by the Helsinki District Court. The court ordered the parents to pay their child 1,500 euros for pain and suffering.
The court ruled that the procedure met the characteristics of bodily harm as the baby was circumcised without an anasthestic. Furthermore, the rabbi who performed the circumcision is not licensed to practice medicine in Finland.
The prosecutor had sought to convict the couple on grievous bodily harm charges or the conspiracy to commit such harm. The court, however, dropped the charge to conspiracy because the parents did not themselves perform the circumcision.
The rabbi circumcised the week-old boy at Helsinki’s Jewish Community Centre last spring. The baby was later rushed to hospital because of excessive bleeding.
Expert witnesses testified that circumcision complications are very rare. That said, the court ruled that neither the rabbi nor the parents can be perceived as having willfully caused the problems that arose after the operation.
Finland’s Supreme Court ruled in 2008 that male circumcision carried out for religious and social reasons and in a medical manner does not constitute a criminal offence. At the time it pointed out that the circumcision of Muslim boys is an established tradition and an integral part of the identity of Muslim men.

Could you imagine if every single boy who got a bris decided to sue their parents in a helsinki court! I could definately use some money now. Hey lets clog up the filand court system.
Hey better yet why not just sue finland for all the drunk accidents that occured from their vodka finlandia.
Open your minds a bit.
I think all #5 is trying to say is that FROM A SECULAR PERSPECTIVE (i.e. the courts), it is understandable that circumcision should be prohibited. After all, not only does it not make any logical sense, but logically it even seems harmful. And secular perspective revolves (at least officially) around logic.
I do not think #5 was having any sort of internal issue with bris milah – no need to attack him/her or try to ‘straighten him/her out.’
no, we do not make up our own rules. our religion, unlike all others, was established by G-d Himself, not by human beings- which is why they are true, just, and unquestionable. religions established by humans are subject to change constantly, because they’re constantly trying to improve something man-made. Ours are supreme, and trustworthy because they were founded by something way higher than ourselves.
what planet did you fall off of? does a dr. give a baby anesthetic before he gives the baby any sort of injection? does a baby get anesthetic before she gets her ears pierced?
we trust in hashem and regarding circumcision we have always done and we will continue to do a bris the way hashem comanded us to do it!! in communist russia tney went underground to preform a bris milah and i hope with hashem’s help we do not start to go backwards
why SHOULD circumcision without anesthetic be permitted? Other than its religious justification, why should society allow such pain? What constitutes a religion? What constitutes accepatble behaviour based on religion? where does one draw theline and who can draw the line? Can I establish a religion and say it is our custom to cut off a week old baby’s finger? Make a hole in her ear? scrape his left knuckle? even WiTH anesthesia there’s a valid question.
All together food housing clothes etc. is more then 1500 euro…
Did no one see to whom the parents must pay? To the child! Kinda gives new meaning to the phrase “trust fund baby”.
This is scary stuff. It reminds me of the decrees we learn of that took place in the times of chanukah….
Yeah, but the bris is also an integral part of identity of Jewish men!!! I mean, lets be normal and serios here!
