About 70 local residents participated in a Zoom meeting of the Brooklyn Community Board 9 Housing Committee on Monday evening.
“This was without a doubt, the most well-attended community board meetings post Covid, and seems like it’s a sign of things to come,” said Jay Sorid, who wrote an op-ed to alert local residents of a planned new housing development in Crown Heights which will bring more homeless individuals to the neighborhood.
“There was confusion about my comment whether the total homeless beds count should include not just the 364 beds of the homeless shelters, but the 326 beds of supportive housing,” he said.
The Chart on page 7 of the NYS Environment Draft ESD-KPC-DSOW.pdf (ny.gov) lists under Supportive Housing the sub-categories of Chronic Homeless having 136 units and Behavioral Health ( SMI = Serious Mental Illness – e.g. schizophrenia) having 139 units, the other two subcategories are foster kids who dont have homes, and young adults 18-25, which may be foster kids as well.

The presentation provides info, but the feedback from Jews who have had problems with the oversaturation of homeless services in the neighborhood is more telling.

What would happen if a frum family became homeless? (Has happened many times.) Where do you want them to go?
What about all the families “exiled” from CH because we couldn’t afford the rent?
Now you’re worried about your property values. But you couldn’t care less when our family had nowhere to go.
The city does not cater for CH COMMUNITY – we have zero affordable housing /lottery housing /shelter for A family of 3+ children.
By building projects for homeless and seniors for more then 1000 units – the city need to balance and build for families first to balance. Unfortunately there is zero for Jewish community
You are darn right homeowners care about their property value and quality of life. They have worked hard to save and scrape every cent sacrificing a lot to finally buy their own home. Of course they should have a say and voice concerns with such plans that will impact their lives and that of their children. This development isn’t for CH families who can’t afford rent in central CH, take a look at the plans and you will see that. And this asinine idea of the homeless, mentally ill, low income, all living in some kind of symbiotic paradise with… Read more »
The homeless shelters proposed are almost all for single homeless men, usually mentally unstable.
Its dangerous for anyone -especially a frum looking person to live in one of these places.
I was thinking yesterday evening that I wished we had something from within the community that helps families in this situation, but surely we already do, don’t we?
When my family became homeless we were forced to move out of CH. Nobody cared then. Nobody raised a hue and cry about the frum Lubavitch families with nowhere to go. Now they’re all screaming about a homeless shelter.
The Jewish & African American Community & residents of this area jointly oppose to these new drug infested crime shelters.
We both want beautiful and safe streets, we need to team up together with our friends and neighbors that own homes on our blocks in south CH and demand no new drug shelters.
On a similar note, I hear our friends in Park Slope would love to have these drug shelters instead, let’s give them the honors, there are many viable locations in park slope.
What are the next steps we can take for this project to get revised with all our concerns taken into account.
Safety
Larger units for bigger families
Parking
Significant trash on streets and sidewalk
Overloading sewer / power grid Etc
Is there anyway to prove the increase of crime in the area and connected to the homeless shelter addresses of people that got arrested, due to the shelters we have already, is there some way maybe to get the details from the 71st Precinct or maybe it’s public records??? Keep in mind this is in addition to the crimes that these current shelter people got away with. and all the many times a week the cops refuse to arrest them (so there’s no record) and they get sent to the hospital as a EDP (emotionally disturbed person) simply to get… Read more »
Dear Friends, PLEASE PLEASE take a minute and send an email. Our young couples and grandchildren are buying houses here by the skin of their teeth. Borrowing and then having to heavily renovate. The future of our women and children are at stake. They are trying to sell this project under the terms of , “workforce development, supportive services and all the other feel good words. The reality is 700 MORE homeless coming to town. This is in ADDITION to the shelters being proposed on rutland etc. Those of us in central crown heights we are not protected either. Just… Read more »
With all due respect to the non profit homeless provider “Breaking Ground” representative. I was on the Zoom meeting. In a well spoken excuse to claim that the current lawlessness & crime from homeless in south CH is not their fault. “Breaking Ground” representative claimed that “Breaking Ground” does NOT currently manage any homeless shelters in 11203. Total flat out lie, Breaking Ground not for profit organization CURRENTLY manages and runs a crime ridden zombie infested homeless shelter at 781 Clarkson Ave, Brooklyn NY 11203. I know this first hand because my cousin was the victim of a violent crime… Read more »
Sad reality
Why they do not build for rent? For us?
Thats more suitable than 3/4 bedroom apartments. Our children deserve not to be squashed in. We deserve better!
There were cases in NYC when poor & ex-criminal minorities moved in & property values declined. Many middle class residents nearby sold their homes.
This entire homeless development project may be illegal. Jay mentioned on this Zoom conference that part of the restrictions to build out on this NY state owned land to put homeless shelters, is legally only allowed if there are No other state land to build on available. When in fact there are multiple other NY state owned land in NYC currently available, including what he mentioned on Rikers Island (a different safe area NY state owned land on the island away from the jail) We need lawyers to do more research on this angle, and have some chevra in the… Read more »
Only 70 locals on the Zoom? What a Joke if you want to stop this you”ll need more than that maybe x10
The numbers ranged 70-80 but some came on for short time.
Really, these important meetings have to be publicized much better..
So far not a word form anyone of the CHJCC or any of the other askonim who claim to look out for CH.
In addition to all these new shelters.

There seems to be no plan in the proposal to protect the safety and security of those who currently live in the area. Is the 71st precinct prepared? Does the shelter have enough security? The 71st precinct cannot handle this, they have said on multiple occasions that they dont have enough resources. Every human being has the right to a dignified and safe place to live, none more than the other. It is unconscionable to prioritize the needs of homeless individuals ahead of the local residents. Who will be responsible if one of the children in our community get attacked?… Read more »
Take serious action ! Get your block involved . Make a shturem , contact mr jay sorid , sue the state ! I do not live in the area but I have grandchildren that do! I am telling them to do the same . Get the email addresses and send the emails. Do not wait for anyone to do anything for you . We know there is no active leadership here.
As an out of towner, I too feel an obligation and desire to support these voices of concern.
Crown Heights is our shechunah and believe that we should all email from afar as well as the local residents.
Get rid of ALL the shelters from this community. These are people with serious addictions and mental issues. These shelters do not belong near homes and families much less schools and children. This is a travesty.
On Troy ave today I saw 3 dark skinned men in their twenties, speaking another language walking south down Troy. They each were holding a plastic bag with a blanket in it, and carrying identical backpacks with a red stripe on them. Any video on Troy will verify that. Looked exactly like those news clips of what they give them after they bus them here. I will bet you, we are now also the housing grounds for illegal migrants
Why can’t NYC build a mega sports & recreational center to benefit all residents of this neighborhood, Both Jewish & Non jewish alike. NYC did this by the Bedford/Union Armory & it’s a beautiful thing in the area and it serves all people. If NYC decided they are already footing the massive bill to develop this land, then let NYC build a mega sports center to BENEFIT ALL residents of this area, instead of a drug shelter which will hurt ALL residents of this area. It’s common sense, and a no brainer. Sports for our youth or homeless shelters for… Read more »
Let me put this bluntly. Regarding the residents of Crown Heights and East Flatbush, We have the same safety concerns. The Jewish community, 99% which are law abiding citizens. don’t want this new crime shelter. The black community, 99% which are law abiding citizens. don’t want this new crime shelter. Nobody here wants more crime shelters EXCEPT for the CEO of Breaking Ground (who probably doesn’t even live in NYC) that makes 500k a year from our tax dollars. We need to unite with our neighbors in the black community, and together like we have done many times in the… Read more »
You have our backing but we need advice on how to proceed!!
Bet VERY few of the parties involved in this project actually have there primary residence in this immediate vicinity. Imagine, the state rep didn’t even know enough about the area to realize that Clarkson Avenue and Hawthorne Street are just a two, three minute walk from each other. I’m just wondering why our zip codes always get targeted for these kinds of housing “solutions” whereas Park Slope, Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn Heights and other such snotty upper class communities in Brooklyn always find a way to wiggle out of it. Something doesn’t add up.Could it be that at the end of the… Read more »
They are doing it anyway. They are focused on Crown Heights.
All the ‘askanim’ that ‘care about the shchuna’ are nowhere to be seen
wake up, smell the coffee
they dont actually care, the shchuna is a cash cow for them
that is all
sad, truth.
Something tells me this is payback for all our Republican votes…. Just saying…
Mayor Adam’s and Cathy Hochul doing what they do best. Whoever voted for them……this is what you voted for.
This plan was in the making before most of us voted for Lee Zeldin; they just had the “good” sense to keep it low key lest it encourage more people to vote Republican. there’s no winning in NY politics. If you vote your conscience you lose on both ends – your candidate doesn’t get elected and the winners thumb their noses at you since they know they can’t count on you to keep voting them back into office.
