Eliyahu David Kay, a young Chabad man from South Africa, has been identified as the victim of a terror attack in Jerusalem Sunday morning, 17 Kislev, 5782.
He is the son of Avi and Devorah Kay, members of the Chabad community in Johannesburg.
He was 26.
Kay was living in the Israeli city of Modi’in. He worked as a tour guide in the Western Wall tunnels.
He was on his way to Daven Shacharis at the Kotel plaza, as he did daily. As he was walking, he was holding a Sefer of the Rebbe’s Likkutei Sichos and his Tefillin in his hands when he was murdered.
As a bochur, he studied at the Tomchei Temimim Yeshivah in Kiryat Gat. He was engaged to be married in a few months, it was reported.
Kay was murdered and another 3 were wounded, one moderately to seriously, this morning, Sunday, in a shooting attack near the Chain Gate near the Western Wall.
The terrorist was neutralized by security forces.
The wounded were evacuated to Hadassah Ein Kerem, Hadassah Mount Scopus and Shaare Zedek hospitals in Jerusalem.
Preliminary investigation raises suspicion that the terrorist disguised himself as a haredi man and opened fire with a submachine gun at passersby and policemen who were at the scene. A knife was also found on the terrorist’s person.
Police believe that another terrorist played a part in the attack, and that he escaped the scene. Police are conducting searches for him.
The terrorist has been identified as Fadi Abu Shahidam, a resident of the Shuafat refugee camp in his 40s, who is affiliated with the Hamas terrorist organization.
Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai arrived at the scene of the deadly attack in the Old City of Jerusalem and said that the terrorist was known to the police.
“The police response was quick, this is a serious incident – carried out by a source familiar to us,” Shabtai said. “We will continue to investigate the circumstances and the immediate circles of the perpetrator until we find the verdict.”
“There is no doubt that this is a very serious attack, carried out by a source familiar to us, but not at the military level. The police response was very fast, within 32 seconds they sought contact and eliminated the terrorist,” the commissioner added.

4 were injured not 3. 2 policemen were injured and released from the hospital. But 2 people remain in the hospital, one with several gunshot wounds in serious condition.
The terrorist was a teacher in an israeli arab school. He used a machine gun supplied by hamas. Was known to be a member of hamas but allowed to teach in an israeli school
Avi and Devorah, I am so sorry for your loss. There are no words. Am Yisroel is crying with you.
May his soul rest in peace.
Just by watching Eli daven one would be inspired to connect to Hashem.
He had a strong and bright inner light and joy that exuded outwards, bringing that light and joy to those around him.
Holy Yid Holy Neshama.
Break down the gates of golus.
May Hashem avenge his blood, bring nechama and strength to his family and bring us to a time where no Jew need fear walking in the streets anywhere, let alone Yerushalayim.
Hashem please bring Moshiach NOW!!!
Ad mosai? Ad mosai? Ad mosai?
This is so sad 😞

The pictures of the terrorist during the attack CLEARLY show him NOT in disguise but wearing traditional Muslim clothes!
May He be a meilitz yosher for Avi Devora, the Kay family and Am yisroel.
May Hashem give the family strength and good news to report from here on
Boruch dayan haemes !!
Was simply a legend and mentch. See you soon.
Nothing is stam
That a Jew should leave this world in such a way in such a place just 48 hours before the Alter Rebbe’s geulah is something the whole world, Jews and Gentiles, should take note of…in such a way that leads to a material change that will cause Moshiach Tzidkenu to come today
HY’D!
This is so so sad. A young peaceful human life snuffed out. Murdered. By another human. Poisoned by poisonous murderous ideology. So much wrong with the picture. Some superpower watching over you? Maybe. But preventing such awfulness? A safe place? Apparently not.
Why?! Ad Mosai!!!
What an enormous loss. Hashem yinkom domoh! Can you please post an e-mail address for writing tankhumim, words of consolation, to the family?

They leave in Israel, they work in Israel and they kill our children? Teaching kids in schools, what can they teach children of Israel?
Mashiyach where are you? We need you NOW!
🤦🏼♂️😢
Does anyone know the address, presumably in Modi’in, where the family is sitting shiva?
Dear Avi and Devorah and the Kay family.
We are crying with you and praying for his neshama. May Hashem give you strength and console your heart in your terrible loss. My son, from Canada studies in Yeshiva close to Modi
