Last night, the 8th night of Chanukah, over 200 people gathered at Cardiff Castle for a historic moment as the first ever public Menorah lighting to be held at the Castle took place.
In attendance were many local dignitaries, including the Lord Lieutenant (Queen’s Representative to Cardiff)- Morfudd Meredith, who was honoured with lighting the Shamash, the First Minister of Wales- Mark Drakeford, the Minister for Social Justice- Jane Hutt, several Members of Parliament, Members of Senedd (the Welsh Assembly), local Councillors, faith and civic leaders.
The castle is situated right in the center of Cardiff, the capital of Wales, and is an iconic emblem of pride to the Welsh people. To have the Menorah lit on the Castle grounds was truly a momentous occasion, fusing the Jewish and Welsh pride of the local community.
Rabbi Michoel and Aidele Rose of the Cardiff United Synagogue, along with their 5 children – the only Shluchim to Wales, serve the Jews of Cardiff as well as various smaller neighbouring communities across South Wales. They work with the local Shul community, run a Cheder (Hebrew school) on Sunday mornings, Cteen programming, support Jewish uni student life, and all life cycle events.
At the Menorah Lighting, the Cteen volunteers welcomed people as they came in, gave out welcome packs, and served hot latkes, doughnuts, and hot chocolate.
