‘From the Gegent’ is a new series of articles featuring businesses, services and the people behind them in the Crown Heights neighborhood in Brooklyn. Presented by Mica Soffer, owner and publisher of community news service COLlive.com and neighborhood directory gegent.com:
For many residents of Crown Heights, the sight of Yitzchok Rosler is the ultimate reminder that Pesach is around the corner.
A resident of Toronto, Canada, Rosler relocates each year to New York where he runs the Kahan’s Pesach Store, nestled at the back of Kahan’s Superette on Kingston Avenue.
He founded the Pesach Store some 40 years ago together with his brother-in-law Berel Kahan, the owner of Kahan’s. Rosler would run it for a few months each year, placing orders and welcoming customers in the weeks before Pesach.
“People always joke, when I see your face, I know I better start getting ready and clean my house, because Pesach is coming,” Rosler told COLlive.com about becoming a local fixture during the month of Nissan.
Nowadays, the newly expanded Pesach store is managed by Mr. Kahan’s son Tully Kahan until a few weeks before Pesach. Mr. Rosler still greets customers in the weeks before and during Pesach.
“We were the original and only Pesach store in Crown Heights for many years,” Tully Kahan told COLlive.com.
“Because of that, people would come from all over – Staten Island, Long Island, Connecticut, Springfield, for their Pesach shopping.”
Today Kahan’s carries a full selection of Kosher for Pesach items, such as coffee, tea, cookies, cakes, chips, treats for the children, breakfast cereal, nuts, chocolates, and more.
“The most difficult part of running a Pesach store is running it simultaneously to our regular store,” he says. “Our goal is to give the customer the experience they are used to while shopping, in a tighter space than usual.
“We keep improving every year, to make sure shopping is easy and convenient right up to Pesach for the Chometz purchases, and then during Pesach for Pesach purchases,” he says.
What are some of the most interesting Pesach items selling this year?
“They’ve come out with some really interesting things, like Oreo sandwich cookies, graham crackers, and even lasagna noodles,” Kahan says.

Much hatzlacha!
Toronto resident
All year round it is a pleasure to shop at Kahan’s. Whether it is Tully patiently waiting for your payments, Leibel making sure to show you all the specials or Yitzchak Rosler, the Pesach product specialist! Pesach shopping doesn’t feel like a chore because everyone is so helpful. All of our community stores can take a lesson from their approach. We’ve been shopping there for over 30 years and wouldn’t go anywhere else! A kosher un freilechen Pesach.
Bilssy is kitnot just a reminder for people
Years ago when we couldn’t get any kosher products overseas I would make my annual trip to Crown Heights and go to Kahan’s to do my complete Pesach shopping. Reb Yitzchok was always very helpful and friendly and I was totally amazed how everything was carefully packed and that nothing ever came broken, not even the heavy glass oil bottles.
