Chabad of Merrick-Bellmore-Wantagh is anticipating what is considered a momentous first time event spearheaded by Mr. Chona Gewirtz on Tuesday, September 13th at 7:30 pm — the on-site printing of the Tanya – one of Chabad’s seminal works – a guidebook written by Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, who was the 18th century founder of Chabad Hasidism.
“The book primarily discusses the struggle we all experience between our material physical self and our spiritual yearnings,” said Rabbi Shimon Kramer of Chabad of Merrick-Bellmore-Wantagh. “It has been called an owner’s manual for the body and soul.”
Tuesday, September 13th was selected for the printing of the Tanya because it corresponds to the eighteenth day of Elul on the Hebrew calendar – the birthday of the Tanya’s author, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi (also known as the ‘Alter Rebbe’).
The ceremony will be held at the Chabad Center in Merrick. Rabbi Leibel Baumgarten, the director of the Chabad of the Hamptons and a descendant of the Alter Rebbe will be joining this auspicious event and sharing words of inspiration.
To date about 6,000 editions of the Tanya have been published around the world.
It is a great honor and blessing to have a Tanya printed in our community, and it is a special merit to participate in the printing and to have one’s name inscribed in the actual book!
Before we go to print, we would like to offer everyone the opportunity to have a share in this great merit. Dedications are available as well!

The printing was followed by a farbrengen of Long Island Shluchim, organized by Rabbi Tuvya Teldon. Through the efforts of Rabbi Leibel Baumgarten starting in the 1980’s, until now the Tanya had been printed in every zip code (more than 300) in Long Island except 11566, which is Merrick. With this printing in Merrick the Tanya has now been printed in every Long Island zip code. Shechecheyanu v’kimanu v’higianu l’zman hazeh!
