What exactly is malkos

What exactly is going on with malkos and what does it signify ???I plead ignorance and I’ve never seen this before.
Thank u for anyone who can explain

Malkos means “whipping.” Real malkos was administered by a beis din for various infractions (the Rambam lists 207 negative mitzvos that carry this penalty), and was quite painful and humiliating. The malkos we do nowadays are symbolic of it (and are meant to atone for the recipient in case indeed he did any of those), but is just a series of light taps with a belt.
