Rabbi Michael Tayeb, the renowned mashpia in the Kfar Chabad village in Israel, is speaking out against the abundance of reading material that is scattered in shuls each Shabbos.
“When you come to shul on Friday after candle lighting, you find an overload of pamphlets on the entrance table and in the shul itself,” Rabbi Tayeb lamented in his recent column “L’Chaim, Chassidim” published in the Kfar Chabad magazine.
“The serious problem is that among them are different and odd pamphlets – not to mention weird – and they serve as reading (learning) material for our very own” during davening and the reading of the Torah, he said.
“There’s isn’t a shortage of what to learn,” stated the Mashpia. “If only we would cover what is expected of us on a daily basis and especially on Shabbos Kodesh” – among them Chitas, Rambam, Shnayim Mikra, Likutei Torah and Torah Ohr.
“The Rebbe said 1,562 maamarim, there’s tens of Likutei Sichos for each week,” he said, noting that this is in addition to the newly published Sichos, Maamarim and Igros Kodesh from Kehot – Vaad Hanochos B’Lahak.
One exception, he says, was offered by the Rebbe during a farbrengen in 5710: A chossid should regularly be learning maamarim and sichos, but when the mind is weary one can read (Chassidishe) stories.
“Let’s leave the pamphlets and go back to the culture of seforim, the holy seforim that were studied by our parents and their parents,” wrote Rabbi Tayeb, who serves as Mashpia at Yeshivas Oholei Tmimim in Kfar Chabad and a guest of many farbrengens.
He suggested: “Perhaps the Gabboim in our shuls, with the consultation of the rov, should start filtering the amount and quality of the pamphlets that enter our territories, each place according to their interests and calculations.
“Instead, they should purchase a few Likutei Sichos from the first volumes, stories of Chassidim, Chassidus Mevueres so the voice of Torah should be heard in our midst.”
All that wasted paper is Bal Tashchis too.
At least people are learning something. The pamphlets add spice to one’s Shabbos and inspire people. Complaining is the yetzer hara.
Are you actually calling a statement by a respected mashpia, who probably knows and practices far more Chassidus than you, something from “the Yetzer Hara”?!
At Hadar Hatorah, too much sheimos, most of us can’t read it, we have a huge library, and he is write, chitas and Rambam is already overwhelmingly, and shnayim mikra, forget about it!! These pamphlets are delivered without permission, and destination is stuck with sheimos disposal…
Go HMS
While stupid content shouldn’t be printed and not every tom dick and Harry needs to begin a new publication, Torah and story paphmlets makes learning more avilable and accessible. While one may not go to the shelf to find something to read or learn and he may not even know where to look, here it is accessible. What’s wrong with a chassidshe story or vort for the Shabbos table? Not to detract from learning from seforim, rather to complement or for those who aren’t “big seforim guys”.
Waste of funds to cover shaimos costs
These pamphlets are printed so somebody can charge for the printing
Then the shul has the burden to bury it in shaimos
Some people hold that since these are not sifrei kedusha and do not have Hashem’s name
that they can be discarded, especially if double wrapped.
It’s out of hand and the shaymis is more then ever ! The word kavod is mentioned umpteen times during tefillos shouldnt Seforim, Shuls, etc be required to pass inspections per Halacha and derech Eretz !
Matza chen baynay elokim vadam is necessary for Brachos to manifest ! Shalom !
These pamphlets are targeted only for certain ppl in order for them to keep busy with Torah related material rather then talking between themselves. it’s like giving a lollypop to a child to keep quiet…
Such a chutzpah! How dare we entice Anash to perhaps read some inspiring words or divrei torah! We must stop these papers in shul so finnally we can talks sports at the shabbos table instead of sharing the story or vort we read in shul. Say not to chizuk! Say not to divrei torah! Likutei sichos only! Also we should not have the easier sichos, only the more complicated sichos. That is the best way to ensure we eradicate torah from the home of our laymen.
Point taken
Don’t forget it is important to learn Gemara
