Jerusalem Post reports:
Israel plans to cut one million dollars from its funding to the United Nations so that it can build a museum in Hebron.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decided to take that step after UNESCO on Friday inscribed Hebron’s Old Town and the Cave of the Patriarchs to the State of Palestine on the World Heritage in Danger list.
It will also spend the money on additional projects to strengthen Jewish ties to the Biblical city of Hebron and the adjoining settlement of Kiryat Arba.
The UNESCO vote marks the first time that a Jewish religious site is registered to the State of Palestine. The Cave of the Patriarchs is the second holiest site in Judaism.
After the vote, which took place in Krakow, Poland, Netanyahu said, ”This is another delusional UNESCO decision.”
“This time, they decided that the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron is a Palestinian site, meaning that it is not Jewish, and that the site is in danger,” Netanyahu said.
“Not a Jewish site?! Who is buried there? Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca and Leah – our patriarchs and matriarchs! And the site is in danger? It is only in those places where Israel is, such as Hebron, that freedom of religion for all is ensured,” Netanyahu said.
“In the Middle East, mosques, churches and synagogues in every other place are being bombed – in places that are not Israel. We will continue to protect the Cave of the Patriarchs, freedom of religion for all and the truth,” Netanyahu said.
The site is already on Israel’s list of national heritage sites, but the Jewish communities in Hebron have long struggled with the Israeli government for more resources, including for funds to build a roof to cover the main Jewish sanctuary.
There is only a plastic covering over the synagogue, and it often leaks in the rainy months.
Gave away hebron… now it has come to this
I like what Bibi is doing these days, but it’s true that some of his earlier decisions helped cause this Hebron mess, in the first place. Many Israeli had met with the Rebbe OBM and he gave them all advice on what to do and how to act. Not one of them ever precisely followed (I am not sure they followed the Rebbe’s advice at all, but definitely they did not all of it and most likely not even half of it), what the Rebbe had told them. If they had, Israel would be much better off today then they… Read more »
The real problem is that Bibi gave Hebron to the terrorists in the ‘Hebron Agreement’, and for eight years now he has not given permission to the Jews to build in Hebron, Judea&Samaria and even in Jerusalem, as if this does not belong to the Jews!
If this is what prime minister dose, how will the nations behave differently?
an offshoot, extension or affiliate of the UN?
Moshiach Now!
The UN has no control over UNESCO’s decisions. He can’t cut Israel’s contribution to UNESCO, because Israel hasn’t given them a penny in years — and neither has the USA.
It’s his own da– fault
So he cut 1 million dollars? Very nice. How much am I still contributing to this worthless venture through my taxes?
It’s time for the UN to get out of Israel and for Israel to stop funding the UN. Whatever we get from them isn’t worth it.
