I don’t know if an op-ed is the right word for describing what I’m about to write. I don’t know if I’m interested in all those comments and commentary. I don’t know what my point in writing this is. And I don’t know if I should be writing anything at all.
But to sit back and be quiet?
It’s been 30 years. 30 years of pain. 30 years of darkness. 30 years of Golus. 30 years since Chof Zayin Adar Rishon 5752.
(To the less knowledgeable ones amongst us: On Chof Zayin Adar, while davening at the Ohel for Klal Yisroel, the Rebbe suffered a stroke. Two years later, on the same date, the Rebbe suffered a more severe stroke, eventually leading up to Gimmel Tammuz, a few short months later. There. You have it. Now what?)
For many, this day brings out bitter memories, intense yearning and a burning desire to hear the beloved voice of the Rebbe again. The voice which has not been heard in 30 years.
For others, hopefully, many others, that fateful day, inspires, encourages, and empowers them to unite and “Do all you can to bring Moshiach.”
But for most, I dare say, we’d rather not bring it up. Definitely no point in writing an op-ed about it on COLlive. Why bring up painful topics. Let us continue doing all the wonderful and amazing things we did and do to give the Rebbe nachas. To bring Moshiach.
I’m gonna guess that most or many of the readers here (myself included) were “born after”. They never heard or saw the Rebbe they love so much. Yet, they are all busy preparing for the milestone celebration of 120 years to Yud Alef Nissan. They’re working hard on giving the Rebbe the best Gift possible that will make him happy. They’re “doing everything they can to bring Moshiach.”
So why try to depress them?
And now you’re probably thinking. What’s your point in writing this? What are you trying to get to? What do you want from all those scrolling online to see the latest Mazal tov’s and hear the latest in Ukraine to actually do?
I don’t know.
After all, who does know?
Is there any stone we left unturned?
We literally attempted everything possible.
We literally did “everything we can to bring Moshiach.”
Learning and Davening. Shlichus and Mivtzoim. Studying about Moshiach and living with Moshiach. Mega projects and individual Mitzvos. Billboards and pamphlets. Flyers and Seforim. We worked on our own and we reconciled with old friends. Agreeing and disagreeing.
We sang and we danced. We farbrenged and we cried.
What didn’t we do?
In the Rebbe’s words at the end of the week of mourning for Mrs. Lapine Hy”d, days before Chof Zayin Adar:
“Bnei Yisroel are in Golus for more than one thousand, nine hundred years and Moshiach Tzidkeinu still hasn’t come!… We finished all the Avoda for the times of Golus, we tried all possible activities (including and specifically through rejoicing in Adar for sixty days) and we don’t know what more there is that can be done. And yet, another week passes, another day passes, and another moment passes and the Geulah still hasn’t come B’poal Mamosh!”
So what’s the answer?
I don’t know.
No, I don’t have any grand ideas.
I don’t have any ‘lightbulb’ solutions to our 30-year problem.
Rabbi Yisroel Meir Lau once related a question the Rebbe asked him in Yechidus. Why, the Rebbe wanted to know, is there no revolution to change the political party that held the helm of the Israeli government for forty years? Why is there such stability in the land of the most revolutionary people?
In response, he shared with the Rebbe a story about a waitress he recently met who lost her entire family in the Holocaust. When she finally remarried to try starting a new life, she lost her husband in the independence war and currently, she was waiting to hear word from her only son who was on the battlefield in the Yom Kippur war.
When he finished his story, he turned to the Rebbe and said. “Perhaps we are a bit tired of revolutions, Rebbe. We have no more strength for such things. How much more can we fight? How long? Perhaps this waitress is a living example of what my generation went through. Who is expected to go into the streets now with flags and start revolutions? All we want now is a little peace and quiet.”
The Rebbe’s eyes filled with tears and then the Rebbe emotionally said. “Now I understand. I understand very well.”
As chassidim, our generation went through a lot in the past 30 years. We have all the strength from the Rebbe to keep on doing what we’re doing, but our strength is waning. We’re tired of revolutions. All we want is for this thing to end already!
We’d rather not have to deal with the “Chof Zayin Adar” problem. We want to forget it and put it as far away as possible. We just don’t have strength to ‘deal’ with it.
But, can we really be quiet?
Can we really let such a day pass without saying to the Oibershter “ENOUGH!”
Yes, we have no more koach and we don’t know what more to do. But, one thing is certain:
30 years is not going to go by without a reaction from us.
30 years won’t pass without us putting up a fight, however small it is.
We are yet again telling Hashem that we have not Ch”v forgotten. It has not slipped our minds. We are as conscious as ever. Your kinderlach yearn to be reunited with their Rebbe, our Tateh.
How long can he suffer?
How long can our father be in pain?
Ribono shel olam, unite us with the Rebbe once again!
This Chof Zayin Adar, let us band together to say special Tehilim, to learn extra Torah – the Rebbe’s Torah, to give more Tzedaka, to increase in Mivtzoim.
Our united power is incredible. We are not deterred from the darkness. We will increase in light. We will continue “doing all we can to bring Moshiach.”
So will all this actually finally bring Moshiach?
I don’t know.
Is there anything else we can do that we didn’t do until now?
I don’t know.
When will the Rebbe be back?
I don’t know. But I know we better be ready, because it can happen at any moment.
There are many questions. And no, I don’t have an answer.
But I won’t be silent.
Rebbe. Ad Masai…
Powerful
Well said
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. How old are you? It must’ve been so hard for the chassidim who lived through it. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, you are a very sincere chassidishe person
Powerful brought me to 😭
I also don’t know, but I feel and relate to the frustration. it really fills me with sadness and anger. What more? What new uphill battle are we supposed to fight before Hashem declares us cured.
I’m tired alright. I’m tired of the galus narrative. I’m tired of hearing people say “we blew it”. I’m tired of defining galus exclusively as pain. I’m tired of listening to the older of our dor shvii skipping to topic of Geula and their suppression of the dvar Malchus. While being empathetic to those pained by galus, we can step into Geula all the time in every situation. I hear the Rebbe every day. I am showing Geula to the whole world. Learn with the Tut Altz campaign, it will help. Remember! Avoda in the Beis hamikdosh is less than… Read more »
Superb! So on the mark, and so well written!!
Thank you for this!
What I often tell people: our Rebbe said we’ve done all that we can. And yet on koach nissan our Rebbe said WE have to do all that we can. And conclusion: the fact that the hisgalus didnt happen is because Hashem is STILL trying to tell us – are YOU REALLY doing ALL that you can? Sinas chenom brought the destruction and we are suffering from it till today. That gives us a big clue what’s missing:lack in ahavas yisrael. Vahavta lreiacha kamocha ZE klal gadol batorah!
Very well said!! Thank you for sharing!
Moshiach now!!
Show up in person the next time there’s an event for survivors of abuse.
Stick up for agunas and promote the halachic prenup as a way to prevent this problem. (See the yashar initiative)
Connect with people who went off the derech who are living in your own backyard
Has anyone ever paid attention to the haftorah of Yom Kippur’s morning? This person seems to have!
… no comments needed to express the love we still have for the rebbe
Hey listen – I’m a naive 20 year old who grew up on Shlichus and in the system – my whole life I was always taught to to believe with my whole heart in the coming of Mashiach and that when he comes we’ll all be gathered to Eretz Yisrael – (everything I’m expressing is my personal feelings and views – not telling anyone what to do please don’t come for me) I don’t want to sit around waiting to be gathered – I want to jumpstart the process and show that I mean business – I believe with my… Read more »

Af the same time its rrally fristarting because we all feel like prisoners trying to escape but woth out hands cuffed. Weve been trying soooo much but to no avail. Its really really discouraging but i belive that by starting with the small pacts hopefully itll bring the final geula!
The upheaval in the world today shows us how close we are to moshiach as the signs that are fortold to happen right before moshiach are happening. We must understand hashem is running the world and put all our trust totally in hashem as he is a loving parent bringing us to the geulah. The rebbe is still with us and finds ways to answer those open to his answers. He said he will find a way to answer. We must have love of every jew. Above all dont give up. It is always darkest before the dawn. It got… Read more »

So Emesdig!!
So basicly whats left is SIMCHA!!
We will dance to the GEULA any minute now כהרף עין!!
There IS and has been an answer ever since the Rebbe said “…open your eyes and you will see he is here…”
The answer is an elephant in the room.
No one dares open their eyes to see him.
Yet it is so crystal clear in the history of Chabad/Lubavitch, and in the hanahga of the Rebbe himself, besides a prominent sicha which makes it imperative.
“…open your eyes and you will see he is here…”

You show courage. I hope some corageous people respond with out-of-the-box ideas.
B”H, As with many of us, this was a struggle for me as well. This changed 2 years ago, Purim 2020, COVID Era. The world 🌎 began to spin fast and radically ever since! So what’s REALLY going on? Let’s set a few points clear: Our Rebbe does not make mistakes ח״ו. 30 Years ago was very messianic. Collapse of communism, Saddam Hussein’s war to name a few….. In the last 2 years, the world has witnessed unprecedented events! So where does this all lead us? I firmly believe, that the Rebbe knew and prepared us for the coming 30… Read more »
This article is exactly what we need a cry for help, a cry to hashem, a cry to our father the Rebbe, ad mosai!! we need to see you again, hear from you, we can’t possibly go on without you, retzoineinu lirois es malkeinu!! daloy golus! it’s time for us to be redeemed! hashem please have mercy on us and let the Rebbe be revealed once again!
We need to protest this helem this dark golus where we can’t see the Rebbe it’s enough thirty years of darkness it’s well overdue.
I grew up in Crown Heights, went through the ‘system’ and have an idea. How about we focus and teach our children to focus on the simple mentschlichkeit, like saying good morning to each other, saying thank you, holding doors for one another (to name just a few). We sometimes forget that Bereishis (morals and values, taking care of family, taking care of each other, respecting each other’s space, etc.) comes before Shemos (the first mitzvah) – if we don’t live by our morals and values, mitzvos are irrelevant. Let’s try that. Or in other words, the last ‘mivtzah’ the… Read more »
Since the Beis HaMikdosh was destroyed the Jewish Nation has been in Golus, we are still there, when Moshiach comes all the questions asked in each generation will be answered all apparent dilemmas will be clarified. The Rebbe (May his merit protect us) dedicated his life to helping us focus on what G-d desires of us at this time, fulfil the Purpose of Creation The Rebbe energised a generation of Jews, people became inspired, the post Holocaust era was uplifted, Judaism was capturing a new audience, many in the old audience were injected with enthusiasm. When Moshiach arrives the Rebbe… Read more »
My dear friends, teach non-Jews Sheva Mitzvos Bnai Noach with in person regular shiurim and you will see Moshiach unfold before your eyes.
There is no need to despair. Just do what Torah, the Rambam, the Rebbe, etc., said our job is – convince the non-Jews to be Chassidei Umos HaOlam.
That is the speeding and fulfillment of the promise of Moshiach and the Geulah.
