An eager crowd gathered in the Jewish Children’s Museum on a recent Monday night, to be educated and inspired at a Wellness Resource Fair hosted by Neshamos.org.
Founded by Dr. Eli Rosen out of concern for the youth in our community, Neshamos is working non-stop to foster mental health awareness and provide resources for educators, parents and youth in our community. At the latest event, a variety of passionate speakers shared their personal insights on positive parenting.
Rabbi Shais Taub opened the night with some thought-provoking questions. Why is it that as Lubavitchers, we view helping secular Jews as a shlichus but assisting our own children when they are in trouble as a burden? How can one discern the time for discipline from the time for acceptance? What is the essential responsibility of a parent?
Chanie Spira regaled participants with her relatable journey from a young mother who planned to do “everything right” to a disillusioned parent who felt disconnected from her children. Parenting classes with Mrs. Blimi Heller taught her how to reach out to her children and recognize what was really going on inside each of them. In a heartfelt plea, Chanie encouraged the audience to take advantage of all the parenting resources that are available today to better their understanding and approach to parenting. It changed her life, maybe it could change yours.
Mrs. Blimie Heller, the keynote speaker of the night, highlighted the difference between problem-solving with your child and solving the problem that is your child. While a system of reward and punishment subliminally teaches children that they can be bought, bribed and blackmailed, coaching children to solve their own problems shows them that they have all the skills they need within them. Mrs. Heller used imaginative examples and practical tips to guide parents through a paradigm shift on the true meaning of chinuch.
Moshe Chanin wrapped up the night with the reminder that every child is a precious neshama that deserves to be cherished. Neshamos.org is here to ensure that every neshama gets the nurturing it needs.
