Rabbi Yisroel Friedman, the renowned Rosh Yeshiva of Oholei Torah Yeshiva in Crown Heights, passed away on Wednesday, 7 Nissan, 5780.
He was 84.
Rabbi Friedman was born in the town of Beshenkovitz in Russia in 5696 – 1936. In 5707, together with his family, he escaped to France, where he learned for 2 years in Tomchei Temimim in Brunoy.
In 1950, Rabbi Friedman, along with his brothers, R’ Meir Friedman and R’ Aharon Nachman Friedman of Kfar Chabad, emigrated to Israel, and he learned in Yeshivas Achei Temimim in Tel Aviv and Tomchei Temimim in Lod.
He later flew to New York to learn in 770, and was recognized as a great lamdan and illuy in learning.
Upon his marriage, he became a teacher in Oholei Torah Yeshiva, and a while later, became the Rosh Yeshiva.
Rabbi Friedman had a wide knowledge in all areas of Torah and was renowned for his unique style of learning. He was known for his being medayek in Rashi, reminiscent of the original Chasidim.
In recent days he was hospitalized after being infected with coronavirus.
He is survived by his daughter, Rochel. He was predeceased by his wife who passed away a few years ago.
He is mourned by his many generations of students whom he taught with warmth and devotion for decades.

What a sad loss
ברוך דיין האמת, a Gaon And Tremendous Yirei Shomayin, and probably one of the greatest minds in Lubavitcher!
This is a very big loss.
I heard he was a Ben Achar Ben from The Magid, can anyone verify is this correct information?
I believe he was named for the Rizhiner – whose name was also Reb Yisroel Friedman. The Rizhiner was a great grandson of the Maggid
He was a ben achar ben from the Maloch, not from the Riziner. His family were Riziner chasidim. His grandfather was a big goen-Harav Zishie Friedman Odessa Rov. His father was a Rov also. All were Boyaner chasidim.
OY Rochel! May your father plead and beg on our behalf to bring Moshiach!
Boruch Dayan Haemes.
What a beautiful panim. He should plead for the Geulah shleima mamash in Shomayim!
Beloved by his Talmidim

I really loved Reb Yisroel and kept in touch with him decades after leaving OT, even though I no longer live in Crown Heights. ברוך דיין האמת
from the Geonim of our generation!!!! Baki in Nigleh and Chassidus. Taught Talmidim for over 65 years העמיד תלמידים הרבה. I heard from Reb Avrohom Levitanski Z”L – who was from the first class of Bachurim that started the Yeshiva in Newark – that when The Rebbe sent the Hanholoh, everyone thought the Reb Yisroel was sent as the Mashpia, and Reb Meylach Tzvibel would be the Rosh yeshiva. they were surprised, that Reb Yisroel was to be the Rosh yeshiva, and Reb Meylach the Mashpia. Such were these Yidden who were masters ion all areas of Torah and Chassidus!!!!… Read more »
I agree 100 percent to all of the above. just it should be said “niglah and cahssidus” not “torah and chassidus” because chassidus is torah
Ad mosai??

Reb Yisroel was a true Giant of a man.
Chossid, Goan, Oved and a dedicated Rosh Yeshiva

May his family receive comfort and experience healing.
I’m sorry for this loss. The hero’s of Chabad suffered bringing this knowledge to the wellspring for us to share w/others. Leaving his ego aside, he gifted each student with the merit to understand how to instill the concepts and repeat, accomplish similarly to the next generation, challenged to teach, reveal and finish the enormous task. Bringing the universal vision to reality. The buttons are sewn bOn and the garnets now cleaned & pressed. Teach that we become our best version when we follow the directives of our teachers, as best as possible. Then the ones we mourn today will… Read more »
Reb Yisroel as he was known, was a great scholar in Toarh learning and was sharp till his last days.
I was fortunate enouph to sit next to him as a Bochur in OT Zal this past year and I’ll tell you one thing, he definitely had a good sense of humor.
From now on we should only hear good news and be greeted by the Rebbe with the coming of Moshiach Tzidkeinu Bekarov Mamosh!!!
