It is with great sadness that the bitter news was received about the passing of Rabbi Ze’ev Dov Slonim, the Rabbi of Central Jerusalem and a member of the Chabad Rabbinical Court in Israel.
He was 84.
Rabbi Slonim was born in Jerusalem on the 22nd of Tammuz 1934 to his father, Rabbi Yehuda Leib Slonim, and was named after his grandfather on his father’s side, Rabbi Ze’ev Dov Slonim, rabbi of the Chabad community in Hebron and one of the most prominent members of the community.
His father was a gabbai of the Chabad synagogue in the Mea She’arim neighborhood and a member of the Chevra Kadisha Chassidim in Jerusalem.
In his youth, he studied at the Mir Yeshiva under Rabbi Yechezkel Levinstein, and when he reached the age of marriage he married his wife Mrs. Gittel Leah. In 1970 he was appointed Rabbi of the Central Jerusalem neighborhoods.
After the passing of his father in 1981, he initiated the printing of the book of the Chitas, in order to facilitate the observance of the Rebbe’s directive to study the daily shiurim.
As an appendix to the book, he attached a compilation of the teachings of our rabbis on the importance of learning Chumash and Tanya, and the great significance of reciting Tehillim.
With the death of some of the most important rabbis of Chabad, he joined the members of the Chabad Rabbinical Court in Israel.
He is survived by his children, Rabbi Aharon Slonim, Binghamton, New York, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Slonim, Jerusalem, Israel, Rabbi Shneur Zalman Slonim, S. Paulo, Brazil, Rabbi Tzvi Hirsh Chaim Slonim, Mitzpeh Ramon, Israel, Rabbi Baruch Slonim, Modi’in, Israel, Rabbi Yaakov Slonim, Givat Mordechai, Israel, his daughter Hadassah and his son-in-law Rabbi Menachem Mendel Osdoba, Jerusalem, Israel.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mrs. Gittel Leah Slonim, 3 years ago.
The levaya will take place from his home, 74 HaNevi’im St. in Jerusalem through the Nahalat Shiva Yeshiva and the Chabad Mea Shearim Chabad Synagogue, to burial on Har Hazeisim.
Rabbi Aharon Slonim will be sitting Shiva Monday only from 12-7 pm at 603 Lefferts Avenue between Kingston and Albany. He will be sitting for the remainder in Israel.
