Friends and former students began visiting the shiva home of Mrs. Razel Wolvovsky, the longtime educator and beloved mother and grandmother from Crown Heights who passed away on Sunday.
Affectionately known as Morah Razel, she has been a devoted mechaneches, whose kindness and warmth endeared her to her students, and all who knew her.
An example of her dedication was shown to Rabbi Shais Taub, the noted speaker and author, who came to comfort the family following the funeral on Monday. He shared the moving memory with his WhatsApp group of parenting insights.
One of Mrs. Wolvovsky’s sons showed him and others a wooden box adorned with flowers that his mother would take out every year on Yud Tes Kislev to present to the children.
Inside the box, there were a pair of electric candles, a photo of the Alter Rebbe, and a Tanya with a soft green cover that she received from the Rebbe‘s hands at 770 Eastern Parkway.
She would use the box and its contents to bring the auspicious day alive and talk about the Alter Rebbe being freed from Russian empirical prison, allowing him to continue to teach Torah and Chassidus to the world.
Her family noted how each year the day of Yud Tes Kislev was special to her, and she would cook black buckwheat, which is customary, and would put out a white tablecloth and serve a festive meal.
“I would encourage everyone to follow Mrs. Wolvovsky’s example, especially this year during her Shiva, to do this in her merit,” Rabbi Taub suggested. “Put out a white tablecloth, light candles, gather the family, serve a Yom Tov meal (with black buckwheat if possible) so that the children should know about Yud Tes Kislev and its importance.”
