The children of Rabbi Shalom Ber Sanowicz obm, a long-time resident of Crown Heights and Baal Tefillah in 770, dedicated a Torah this week in his memory at the Chabad center in Westmount, Quebec.
Rabbi Sholom Dov Ber Sanowicz passed away last year shortly before his 94th birthday.
The Torah was commissioned by his children Rabbi Chaim Yitzchok Sanowicz (Los Angeles), Rabbi Nachman Sanowicz (Crown Heights), Mrs. Hindy Kalmenson (New Haven), Mrs. Reevy Pevzner (Paris), Mrs. Rashi Itkin (Scranton), Rabbi Zalmy Sanowicz (Crown Heights), Rabbi Yossi Sanowicz (Montreal), Mrs. Chanie Hertz (Bensonhurst, NY) and Mrs. Dinie Gorman (Toronto). The Torah was also dedicated to ybl’c their mother, Mrs. Sara E. Sanowicz, to long life.
The writing took place at the home of Rabbi Yossi and Devora Shanowitz, shluchim to Westmount. Guests enjoyed a beautiful reception and received a copy of the upcoming book Starting with Sinai, authored by Rabbi Shanowitz. Upon completion, the Torah made its way in a magnificent and joyous procession through the main thoroughfare of the historic area. The procession featured a vintage fire-engine and vintage vehicles and a Torah truck that was brought in from New York, especially for the occasion.
Many onlookers were visibly moved and emerged from the shops and restaurants that lined the parade route to record the unprecedented display of Jewish identity in this renowned district. As the Shofar was blown and the Shema proclaimed on the streets of Westmount, many were seen wiping away a tear of pride and joy. The day was concluded with a celebration at Chabad of Westmount, with special shows for children, interactive activities, and family fair.
