Parents of Bais Rivkah High School in Crown Heights were left speechless by a video showing a dog sniffing girls’ belongings on Thursday.
The girls were on a bus heading out for their annual Shabbaton trip, where they spend the weekend davening, learning, joining inspiring farbrengens and singing together.
A video said to be taken on the bus before they left on the trip shows a frum man holding a detection dog, which is walking among the girls’ belongings, seemingly to search for any substances.
A WhatsApp message was widely shared on social media, supposedly from the school, about dogs coming to sniff on the bus to ensure there are no “drugs, alcohol or vape/cigarettes.”
Mrs. Shaindel Tiechtel, principal, later shared a message on social media, stating that the original message was a hoax and not from the school.
“A fraudulent message was sent out as coming from Bais Rivkah, but there is absolutely no truth to that message. I did not send it nor did any member of my staff,” she said.
Mrs. Tiechtel’s message did not dispute the video or explain why a dog was brought or needed for the school bus.
Parents have been furiously complaining that the school’s action depicts their daughters in a bad light.
One parent who emailed COLlive, said, “If this is what the girls think the school thinks of them, what kind of message are they sending?”
More than one board member said they had no idea about this incident in advance, saying they are “furious” and “trying to get to the bottom of it.”
A former student of the school told COLlive that she remembers there were a few incidents of alcohol or other substances in past, “but I don’t get why the school would embarrass all the girls like this.”
Additional requests for comments from the school administration went unanswered.

What’s the big deal if the girls are smoking weed? What’s the big deal if the girls are drinking alcohol? Is that the solution to drugs ? A dog once in 2 years ? What problem we solved by doing it ? Start taking care of the situation all year round. I applaud Bais Rivkah they 100% did the right thing # 1 I don’t think it’s fair to take away shabatton for 500 girls if 10 of them make horrible choices #2 the girls work so hard in high school so give them a weekend of freedom , no studying hanging out w their classmates and socializing and if these 10 girls want to do this to themselves as well as the other 500 girls than shame on them but Bais Rivkah is 1000% right to do this .
i totally agree with what br did, last shabbaton i was horrified finding out that grils in the rebbe’s school would do such things on shabbos. i was there when we were told about the dogs and i am pretty sure the whole school agreed with it. it is much better than imbaressing girls and actually searching through thier bags.

I only learned about drugs after going away to yeshiva and I’m still hooked on pot and smoke daily. It’s a real struggle but I’ve been smoking since I was 14, forget alcohol and cigarettes that’s always permitted for some reason in our system. But going away at such a young age only to be exposed to the world’s vices and having dorm counselors, not much older than you supplying you with more temptation is plain abuse. I don’t think it is fair to question the schools chioces … obviously they did it for a reason and not for the fun of it , I believe there were some incededants the last Shabbaton that require for them to prevent such incidents this year… nonetheless I heard it was a beautiful Shabbaton and the girls had a blast
Maybe don’t make assumptions about parents before you know the facts. Happens to be that the video going around is of twelfth graders who went a day earlier than the rest f the school and was allowed to have their phones with them for the day. Besides, just because the girls have phones with the, doesn’t mean their parents undermined schools authority. i have to tell you the truth. i have dealings with many schools. the problem is everywhere. we were given this advice, we did it. no sweeping under rugs, we didn’t do it on our own. there were many people who advised to do that. SAY THANK YOU that BR is REAL. i have just returned from THE MOST INCREDIBLE SHABBATON, where the girls grew, had chssidish fun, farbrenged all night, and will be coming home different people.

I think this is the best way.. The girls should be warned beforehand that this will happen so they they can opt to leave the substance at home.. Buy yes, as a mom I applaud the school for taking care of the girls and making sure there is no substance in a shabbaton they are responsible for…

After all these years, BRHS is finally starting to put the girls’ safety above everything else. Instead of hiding behind the false mask of Chassidishkeit, as they did back in my day. However, I condone COLlive for posting this. Many of these girls are minors, and should not have their faces plastered over the internet. This was a matter that should have been dealt with sensitivity.
My first trip as a newly religious person over a decade ago, I was completely surprised by the promiscuous and reckless behavior of the ch youth. These were from girls wearing long jean skirts and pastel button downs, that you’d never assume anything unseemly. Just saying don’t assume because someone’s tznius that they aren’t crying for help. I’m questioning the efficacy of this search tactic. Unfortunately, there probably was a very small minority that used illegal substances at the event and the dog did not detect it. The dog is not a foolproof way of detecting substances. Child at risk by definition is more apt to take risk. Dog will not serve as a deterrent. I think we need to think about this problem in much broader terms.
Unfortunately nothing gets done here until there is an overdose.And usually what IS done ,is a one time speech and that’s it.

He did not confirm nor deny what the dog was there for, either drugs or a safety precaution for explosives etc just like at the Kinus, nor did he say if anything has been detected. I do not know the girls who were expelled but every Jewish child deserves a Jewish education, even the ones who are on drugs. The basis of the Torah is ahavas Yisroel and the school needs to teach it’s students and teachers how to positively affect a fellow student instead of pushing that student away, while at the same time educating students about the dangers of drugs and examining the students’ life situation and establishing that the student has a good mashpia. Light needs to conquer the darkness.
While the dog was necessary for the safety of the girls the schools have a broader responsibility in preventing drug use. The girls must be valued by their schools.They should not have excessive requirements to be considered successful. Perhaps Judaic Studies grades should be calculated mainly based on classroom participation and attentiveness and not marathon testing. The secular studies should focus on passing the Regents exams and little else. The least amount of homework the better I have heard girls get little sleep preparing for all their exams. This leads to a situation of poor mental health and despair.

They should implement this practice at all yeshiva dorms and sleep away camps, especially the sleep away camps out west. The horror stories I’ve heard makes me reluctant to send my boys away, only to be negative influenced. As a bt this is why we left secular society and it saddens me how drugs are very normalized now, especially in California. All schools, camps, yeshivas should be drug, cigarette and alcohol free!!!! I don’t see why with the boys, there seems to be a not a big deal attitude when it comes to these health risks.

Chabad was vilified by the Jewish world when we opened the first Jewish rehab. How dare we call attention to Jewish drug addicts! Had we listened many recovered addicts would still be addicts or worse. True this single step doesn’t solve the problem, but no parent wants their child to be exposed to drugs on a Shabbaton. When school takes girls on a Shabbaton, they take a responsibility. Definitely the right decision.
Our teenagers are not living in a bubble. No matter which school they attend, they are likely to bump into all kinds of negative influence. The sniffer dogs were a great way to protect the students. Other schools require students to take urine tests to detect drugs!!
The best protection, however is education, and building the students’ emotional health so they will have the confidence to make wise choices and resist peer pressure.
Unfortunately, this is the reality but this is not how it should be dealt with. If Beth Rivkah truly cares about the kids that are doing drugs, they should help those kids. Bringing dogs on the bus is not going to solve the underlying issues. Yes, br is definitely on target with the fact that they are aware that drugs can be an issue, and they have many professionals in school talking to the girls. However, the dogs on bus became a laughing joke (especially since it went viral and the girls reaction to it) the issue should be dealt with differently in the future.

Worse than you thought? No, the fault is not with the school, it lies with liberal minded parents who believe in giving their kids whatever they want, whether it’s an Iphone X (how many have them already?) designer sunglasses, hoverboards…nothing is off-limits. A few years ago a married friend of mine told me that her younger sister had just gone on the Shabbaton and that there was a girl (she named her, it was the daughter of an acquaintence of ours and the girl is no longer in br) who brought alcohol/drugs with her on the trip and was caught. I’m so impressed that BR is being proactive and protecting our girls.
When a few girls brought weed on a Shabbaton, the parents got extremely angry at the school for letting such a thing pass without them paying attention.
Now that they do take precautions to ensure the girl’s safety, the parents get furious.

The school must be even worse than I thought. So many commentors defending the school and insisting that the school has no choice, because the students are up to no good. what a shame.
Cannot anyone recognize and acknowledge the fact that no drugs were found and are girls and school teachers and principals are awesome!!
Unfortunately they needed to bring dogs because of the past. Hopefully the girls will have a life lesson from this and say no to drugs.

Beis Rivkah didn’t embarrass your girls. The people who feel they need to post this information on social media are the ones who embarrassed them.

For all those who Are out raged are in denial the fact is the stuff goes on in that school and when my daughter went on the trip once she was in that environment she came home shocked to see on Shabbos if these girls doing what they did. it is the right thing to do unfortunately
As a parent of a girl on the bus I am not bothered by this and I don’t see this as a reflection of our girls, if they had this issue in the past I commend them from dealing with it.
The person holding the dog is a guard hired by the security company known as “Secured” used by Beis Rivkah.
There is a slight difference between the two cases:
By the Kinus they were sniffing to make sure there were no explosives on or under the bus because the Kinus Gala Banquet is a high value target for terrorism with 5,600+ Rabbis and guests.
The reason why the K-9 was sniffing our girls bus was just to make sure that they came home on a spiritual high and not on a physical one.

Despite the blazing headlines and rhetoric, those expressing outrage have yet failed to articulate a coherent explanation as to their being dismayed and unnerved.
The only thing that seems to come across is, that it is totally forbidden to actively take on a bull by its horns.
This whole shaming thing has zero basis. If there is a problem, the Staff is obligated to attempt to ferret it out, or else they abdicating their duties.
I think this is the best thing BR was able to do. Unfortunately this is the reality we live in. And this happening in all schools and yeshivoth. Wake up and sell the coffe!!! It makes sense to be upset about the NEED for bringing sniffer dogs onto the bus. Everyone wishes that this problem wouldn’t exist. But sadly, it does. But why blame the school for protecting the girls from an existing threat? That doesn’t make sense! Instead of blaming and venting maybe find out what you can do to help the situation
I admin I am an overprotective parent. If someone hurts any of my children in anyway shape or form (including embarrassment) I see RED!!!
As an overprotective parent I 100% agree with #34 that any parent that has an issue needs a reality check.
Those that have an issue are the same ones that sweep issues under the rug and look the other way. Wake up and smell the coffee.
We are relieved- I’m more relaxed knowing my daughter will have a great time – and no girls with drugs. They had an incident in the past and lots of girls felt unsafe. While the situation is sad- most of my friends with high school daughters are relieved and thankful
If this is what’s needed then this is what is done. Does anyone complain about sniffer dogs at airports disrespecting ppl? No because that’s what’s needed for everyone’s benefit. No one is embarrassed except someone who is caught. And I don’t pity anyone caught with drugs on such a trip sorry. They should be embarrassed enough to stay far away from this shabbaton

If this is not the kind of atmosphere you want your daughter exposed to, you are apparently in denial about what happens in our mainstream mosdos. The problem is not the school checking and ensuring everything is okay; it is that there are students who actually fall into these things. If you have a better solution for protecting the girls – please share. Otherwise, ignoring the problem is choosing to put your daughter in danger.

As a parent of a girl in this school, I am quite upset about this. This is not the kind of atmosphere and experience I want my child exposed to. And I was not given a choice about this.
Theres a reason why I send my child to bais rivkah, the rebbe’s school, and not PS 123 down the block.

My respect for the school has gone up a few notches after hearing of the extra efforts they took to protect their students. They were checking for drugs leman Hashem!!!! They could have chosen to drop the whole shabbaton when faced with such a situation. Yet they put all their energy into making this shabbaton a success! The unhappy parents may be right that its embarrasing, but no girl should feel that the school suspects HER. Its a GENERAL issue. And yes its embarrasing, but to all of us as a klal. I applaud Bais Rivkah for being proactive and not keeping their head in the sand. It’s unfortunate that people do not see the positive stand that Bais Rivkah took by doing something that is sadly seen as controversial and embarrassing to our girls.

Neither the students or the parents are furious. The students were very respectful about the explanation given to them about this need. And they had a great laugh. Based on past experiences the school had, there was obviously a need for this!!!!

My daughter went in this shabbaton. I feel safer knowing that beis rivkah is protecting their students from the crazy world we live in. This is not degrading her or anyone else who follows basic rules. I respect the school for standing up and facing challenges rather than pretending no problems exist

I commend Bais Rivka for taking pre-emptive steps to eliminate the distractions so that all the girls on the Shabbaton fully maximize from the Shabbaton.
The reality is that some – a very small number – of our young people have succumbed to the temptations of substances. It’s not about trust. It’s about facing realities.

I have my fifth daughter going through BRHS now. Thank you BRHS admin for taking this seriously and doing the responsible thing after a few yechidim brought bad substances to past shabbatons. Of course I was taken aback by the video and wish the world, especially the lubavitch world, we live in was a different place. I am encouraged to know how seriously and upfront BRHS dealt with this. I have today even more confidence in BRHS.
As far as the internal procedures between the admin and board I am sure they will work it out without my comment.

Last year there were 4 girls that had brought ‘items’ to the shabbaton that were illegal. This is facing reality. Why would it embarrass a girl? If she is bringing drugs to a shabbaton, she better be ready to face the consequences. Thank you Bais Rivka Administrators for not putting the wool over your heads!
