"outraged"?
November 29, 2017 10:46 pm

if the reporting is accurate and there were actually parents who were “outraged” by this precautionary act, i would venture to guess they’d be the selfsame parents who’d be”outraged” if someone were to be found at the shabbaton with illegal substances and the school had not taken preemptive steps to make sure it didn’t happen. i’m sure the school took no joy in having to do what they did; they simply faced the fact that the alternative would be worse. btw, re: those who mockingly reported the incident in their yiddish paper as shown above, judging by the numbers of… Read more »

Not acceptable
November 28, 2017 10:24 am

This is totally wrong,
What if c”v a girl would be caught, how embarassing that would be!?
The parents could check their daughters luggage before the go.
And anyway the girls should be taught by their teachers and parents that this is terrible.
But to try to catch someone in front of everyone is disgusting!!

Thank you Mrs. Teichtel and BRHS for taking care of this situation which resulted in an amazing drama-free Shabaton. It made perfect sense to do what was necessary and take these precautions.

What’s the big deal if the girls are smoking weed? What’s the big deal if the girls are drinking alcohol? Let them take their own path and if that means Hashem has going off the derech planned for their future, let it be… maybe they’ll come back stronger. You think addressing the issue in school or with dogs or with punishments from parents will stop them? They’ll find new ways to go behind everyone’s back and do what they want, especially at this age. Restricting them will make it worse. I’m in no way saying it’s okay or it’s a… Read more »

Is that the solution to drugs ? A dog once in 2 years ? What problem we solved by doing it ? Start taking care of the situation all year round. The teachers and principal surly know who are those girls and deal with the kids year round . Beside the chilul hashem and the affect it had on All the kids this is not fixing nothing. You are 200% incorrect
I applaud Bais Rivkah they 100% did the right thing # 1 I don’t think it’s fair to take away shabatton for 500 girls if 10 of them make horrible choices #2 the girls work so hard in high school so give them a weekend of freedom , no studying hanging out w their classmates and socializing and if these 10 girls want to do this to themselves as well as the other 500 girls than shame on them but Bais Rivkah is 1000% right to do this .

November 26, 2017 8:22 pm

i totally agree with what br did, last shabbaton i was horrified finding out that grils in the rebbe’s school would do such things on shabbos. i was there when we were told about the dogs and i am pretty sure the whole school agreed with it. it is much better than imbaressing girls and actually searching through thier bags.
br i agree with you!!

I have a question...
November 26, 2017 5:29 pm

…could it be that there are girls in bris Rivka, who are in the sorry state of taking drugs, and no-one, not teachers nor students are aware that this girl has problems, serious problems? What really bothers me about all this, is that the school seem to be aware that there are major problems yet don’t seem to be dealing with them! If they were, surely there should be no need to bring dogs onto a bus and this shows that everyone is under suspect! It looks as if b.r. staff know there is drugs but have no clue who… Read more »

I wish my yeshiva did this!
November 26, 2017 5:15 pm

I only learned about drugs after going away to yeshiva and I’m still hooked on pot and smoke daily. It’s a real struggle but I’ve been smoking since I was 14, forget alcohol and cigarettes that’s always permitted for some reason in our system. But going away at such a young age only to be exposed to the world’s vices and having dorm counselors, not much older than you supplying you with more temptation is plain abuse. Yes I’m responsible for my choices now as an adult, but yeshiva should never have turned a blind eye. I have brothers still… Read more »

Maybe don’t make assumptions about parents before you know the facts. Happens to be that the video going around is of twelfth graders who went a day earlier than the rest f the school and was allowed to have their phones with them for the day. Besides, just because the girls have phones with the, doesn’t mean their parents undermined schools authority. The girls could have easily come to school and then simply decided not to put her phone into the box and no one would be wiser unless she was caught. The system in brhs is not that parents… Read more »

i have to tell you the truth. i have dealings with many schools. the problem is everywhere. we were given this advice, we did it. no sweeping under rugs, we didn’t do it on our own. there were many people who advised to do that. SAY THANK YOU that BR is REAL. i have just returned from THE MOST INCREDIBLE SHABBATON, where the girls grew, had chssidish fun, farbrenged all night, and will be coming home different people.
Know that Morah Tiechtel worries arnd the clock abt her students.

November 26, 2017 1:36 pm

It is sad that the world has come to this. It is sad their are children in pain in the schools that need the drugs to numb the pain. But good for the school that they are taking action and not letting the drugs spread!

To all those parents who are delusional, and can’t face the facts of reality: BR did the best thing! They know that things happened on these events in the past and we don’t want that to happen again (unless you don’t mind your girl smoking (including weed) on shabbus). Take a look at these comments, collive. Im seeing way more support than outrage against BR. I am a BRHS parent; past, present and iyh for a long time in the future, and I fully support BR in taking responsible and necessary action in protecting our daughters from what is actually a very real problem. My daughters were not scared or degraded. They understand reality. Considering that any parent or student I spoke to, felt the same way, I find colives headline and article to be deliberately false and rabble rousing. After all these years, BRHS is finally starting to put the girls’ safety above everything else. Instead of hiding behind the false mask of Chassidishkeit, as they did back in my day. However, I condone COLlive for posting this. Many of these girls are minors, and should not have their faces plastered over the internet. This was a matter that should have been dealt with sensitivity.

My first trip as a newly religious person over a decade ago, I was completely surprised by the promiscuous and reckless behavior of the ch youth. These were from girls wearing long jean skirts and pastel button downs, that you’d never assume anything unseemly. Just saying don’t assume because someone’s tznius that they aren’t crying for help. Efficacy
November 26, 2017 7:01 am

I’m questioning the efficacy of this search tactic. Unfortunately, there probably was a very small minority that used illegal substances at the event and the dog did not detect it. The dog is not a foolproof way of detecting substances. Child at risk by definition is more apt to take risk. Dog will not serve as a deterrent. I think we need to think about this problem in much broader terms.

November 25, 2017 9:46 pm

It was a necessary step, unfortunately. But I have another question. Bais Rivkah sent out a letter saying that cellphones are not allowed on the Shabbaton, but I see a lot of phones on this video. The parents who allowed their girls to take cellphones are undermining the school’s chinuch. Perhaps that lax attitude towards chinuch is the reason the school has to take the place of parents and laugh down the law.

To #18 (Curious)
November 25, 2017 9:28 pm

You asked: “How does this approach support to ‘creating a safe space for every single child’?”

ANSWER: Pretty well said by #44 and #49 (and several others): PROTECTING all of the good Bais Rivkah girls from having to witness girls using/under the influence of contraband substances IS “‘creating a safe space for every single child”!!!

(What? Are you saying that there should be a space where it’s “safe” from sniffing dogs so that in that so-called “safe space,” “every single child” who wants to do derelict things is “safe” to do such things?????)

To number 69
November 25, 2017 9:26 pm

You are 100 percent wrong, you should be ashamed of yourself and think of what you wrote, just Bic the girls might seem nice and would never to such a thing it means nothing a person could always change quicker then you think

Exppelling students
November 25, 2017 9:24 pm

I do not know the girls who were expelled but every Jewish child deserves a Jewish education, even the ones who are on drugs. The basis of the Torah is ahavas Yisroel and the school needs to teach it’s students and teachers how to positively affect a fellow student instead of pushing that student away, while at the same time educating students about the dangers of drugs and examining the students’ life situation and establishing that the student has a good mashpia. Light needs to conquer the darkness.

No Daughters But....
November 25, 2017 9:22 pm

While the dog was necessary for the safety of the girls the schools have a broader responsibility in preventing drug use. The girls must be valued by their schools. They should not have excessive requirements to be considered successful. Perhaps Judaic Studies grades should be calculated mainly based on classroom participation and attentiveness and not marathon testing. The secular studies should focus on passing the Regents exams and little else. The least amount of homework the better I have heard girls get little sleep preparing for all their exams. This leads to a situation of poor mental health and despair.

A worried Mother
November 25, 2017 9:19 pm

If they would just be careful about tznius we wouldn’t end up in such situations

Better late than never
November 25, 2017 8:41 pm

They should implement this practice at all yeshiva dorms and sleep away camps, especially the sleep away camps out west. The horror stories I’ve heard makes me reluctant to send my boys away, only to be negative influenced. As a bt this is why we left secular society and it saddens me how drugs are very normalized now, especially in California. All schools, camps, yeshivas should be drug, cigarette and alcohol free!!!! I don’t see why with the boys, there seems to be a not a big deal attitude when it comes to these health risks.

To 92 Nothing is being done
November 25, 2017 8:32 pm

bais rivkah has brought people askanim in the past to discuss these issues and many more, so please learn before you post

A concerned parent
November 25, 2017 8:20 pm

Chabad was vilified by the Jewish world when we opened the first Jewish rehab. How dare we call attention to Jewish drug addicts! Had we listened many recovered addicts would still be addicts or worse. True this single step doesn’t solve the problem, but no parent wants their child to be exposed to drugs on a Shabbaton. When school takes girls on a Shabbaton, they take a responsibility. Definitely the right decision.

Voices and choices
November 25, 2017 8:11 pm

Our teenagers are not living in a bubble. No matter which school they attend, they are likely to bump into all kinds of negative influence. The sniffer dogs were a great way to protect the students. Other schools require students to take urine tests to detect drugs!!
The best protection, however is education, and building the students’ emotional health so they will have the confidence to make wise choices and resist peer pressure.

Covering the wound with a bandaid.
November 25, 2017 7:59 pm

Unfortunately, this is the reality but this is not how it should be dealt with. If Beth Rivkah truly cares about the kids that are doing drugs, they should help those kids. Bringing dogs on the bus is not going to solve the underlying issues. What is going to solve the issues is bringing down people that first hand experienced how drugs negatively affected their lives ( whether it’s their kids dying because of…), bringing down people that speak about how drugs is illegal and the consequences that can take place if you are involved. BUT Dogs will not resolve… Read more »

And the girls bringing the illegal substances are the ones who are bringing shame to your girls.
Instead of complaining you should be grateful to the administration for protecting your girls.
And ask COL not to publicize incidents like these.

Worse than you thought? No, the fault is not with the school, it lies with liberal minded parents who believe in giving their kids whatever they want, whether it’s an Iphone X (how many have them already?) designer sunglasses, hoverboards…nothing is off-limits. So why wouldn’t they turn a blind eye to a schnapps or the occasional cigarette? And as we all know, it doesn’t take much to get addicted.

Beis Rivkah has moved into the 21st century & seems to be facing reality. If this action reflects badly on anyone, it’s on the girls and their families.

WELL DONE!!
November 25, 2017 11:52 am

This is the point: the shock should not be that the school did this, but that they HAD to do it. Any parent who feels this was an infringement on privacy, a lack of trust or any other PC nonsense needs a reality check. We can’t afford to trust our kids, any of us. We have to watch them for signs of eating disorders, depression, abuse, bullying, extra money in their pockets etc. EVERY CHILD IS VULNERABLE. Get it through your thick skulls: your children are no less vulnerable than mine or Rebbitzin X’s. And every girl on the bus… Read more »

A few years ago a married friend of mine told me that her younger sister had just gone on the Shabbaton and that there was a girl (she named her, it was the daughter of an acquaintence of ours and the girl is no longer in br) who brought alcohol/drugs with her on the trip and was caught. I’m so impressed that BR is being proactive and protecting our girls.

You kidding?
November 24, 2017 3:20 pm

When a few girls brought weed on a Shabbaton, the parents got extremely angry at the school for letting such a thing pass without them paying attention.

Now that they do take precautions to ensure the girl’s safety, the parents get furious.

To this my friend, I tell you:
Welcome to Crown Heights.

But by thankful that your daughter won’t be exposed to something ch”v in this shabbaton, and that she won’t even have to deal with saying no to someone asking her if she wants to experiment. There is a slight difference between the two cases:
By the Kinus they were sniffing to make sure there were no explosives on or under the bus because the Kinus Gala Banquet is a high value target for terrorism with 5,600+ Rabbis and guests.
The reason why the K-9 was sniffing our girls bus was just to make sure that they came home on a spiritual high and not on a physical one.

what if they had found something? consequences are the real test
November 24, 2017 2:35 pm

acknowledging the issue is good, but only half of the solution. following up on the findings is the real deal. there was one yeshiva high school where students were caught drinking on their shabbaton and, as per school rules, they were forbidden from attending their own graduation. unfortunately for everyone, some of the students were children of board members, and when the principals didn’t budge the board simply fired them. what would happen if the girl was the daughter of a VIP vs the daughter of an average person, or worse yet, one of humbler means? the treatment should be… Read more »

Why the umbrage?
November 24, 2017 2:07 pm

Despite the blazing headlines and rhetoric, those expressing outrage have yet failed to articulate a coherent explanation as to their being dismayed and unnerved.

The only thing that seems to come across is, that it is totally forbidden to actively take on a bull by its horns.

This whole shaming thing has zero basis. If there is a problem, the Staff is obligated to attempt to ferret it out, or else they abdicating their duties.

It makes sense to be upset about the NEED for bringing sniffer dogs onto the bus. Everyone wishes that this problem wouldn’t exist. But sadly, it does. But why blame the school for protecting the girls from an existing threat? That doesn’t make sense! Instead of blaming and venting maybe find out what you can do to help the situation

If this is not the kind of atmosphere you want your daughter exposed to, you are apparently in denial about what happens in our mainstream mosdos.
