This president has done some good things; but no one in their right mind would say he is of good character. You just need to listen to some of his interviews or press conferences – he is completely absorbed in his own greatness, he not only belittles those who disagree with him, but he uses his power to punish them (he called the medical experts ‘idiots’); he fires anyone with a different opinion, and uses litigation to shut people up. Let’s consider his opponent, who is being touted as the great moral hope for America. This is a person who lied – repeatedly – about the truck driver who tragically killed his first wife and child in an accident, claiming that the truck driver was drunk, when in fact he was not. And continuing to lie about it even though the family pleaded with him not to. All in order to win sympathy and votes. That’s your moral exemplar? And that’s just one example of many.
His opponent may not be the paragon of saintly virtue, but what a comparison?? This President has crossed lines in every single facet of life – publicly, shamelessly, arrogantly….no moral compass at all, no busha at all, the law never has and never will apply to him. His whole life is riddled with scandals. How can you possibly compare that to the dirt you bring up regarding his opponent??
b’h The lesson which the Rebbe is teaching us, almost 40 years ago, on the occasion of his birthday in 1983 when he thanks then-president Reagan for his good wishes- at a time the president was miraculously recuperating from an assassination attempt – has NOTHING to do with the good or not good character of the president! The Rebbe sent a letter about the need to promote moral values. But in Trump’s case, he is demonstrating the worst in moral values, and by his example, is eroding moral values in the USA. I don’t understand how someone can speak about the Sheva Mitzvos and offer a brachah to the person who is undermining the Sheva Mitzvos, in the same breath!
See, most of us think that rioting and looting and destroying other people’s livelihoods, and then a presidential candidate excusing that as “just an idea,” is “the worst in moral values,” not sending mean tweets. The same candidate lying repeatedly about the truck driver that killed one’s family, claiming falsely that he was drunk when in fact he was not, in order to win sympathy votes, is another example of “the worst moral values.” And so forth.
Bh The Rebbe in his numerous letters always encourages whoever is DOING the good and right things – regardless of his/her character. It’s important to focus much more on what we ( and others) DO! Rather than what the say As to one’s character flaws – we are all a work in progress. Am I perfect? Are you perfect? But we all strive to improve and grow – through the 613 for Jews and the 7 for non-Jews. Everyone should be encouraged to keep the mitzvos.
