It will only get better, personally I go to ODA (the place that’s taking over the management) and the doctor’s there run on time, they know how to manage a office there.

To “No no” that is BH Beautiful, But we need to do something to encourage all the dozens of Lubavitchers to work with our Crown Heights Community, Or at least at the very minimum to work by another From Community in Brooklyn, Which would make them in many ways a “Rofeh Yedid” to lots of Hidden, weather from our CH Community or other from communitys. instead of taking jobs by some big hospital in Manhattan etc

Everyone has medicaid. Medicaid does not Pay doctors well. Accordingly the salaries of doctors in CH are lower and the revenue of the offices is lower as well. I have good insurance and I never go to CH doctors.

I’ve been waiting a long time for an article like this. The issue is made much worse due to the fact that one of the medical groups in Crown Heights is extremely disorganized. I feel that they have a disrespectful attitude towards their patients, but unfortunately, as the Oped wrote, there aren’t a lot of options. Examples are the long waiting times to be able to reach someone on the phone, often failure to call patients back, and 2 days after waiting for a 60 second follow up conversation with a doctor being told that we don’t want to call… Read more »

I am an young mother and RN with great experience. But every doctors office isn’t hiring. I know many others such as myself who are looking but they “don’t have any jobs available.” They keep costs low by having a small staff. It’s not a lack of providers

Well written but fyi
January 12, 2022 2:01 pm

Well written but fyi this is an issue that expands to much more than just CH. I work in an urgent care and I can assure you that we have many people coming in from all places because they must wait a long time until they can get an appointment with their practitioner.

So true!
January 12, 2022 2:03 pm

We truly are blessed with the most devoted doctors – true Rofeh Yedid’s, but at the same time, not enough doctors for a growing community. We really do need more doctors, as well as orthodontists and OBGYN’s as written. My children are grown up B”H but shlepping to Flatbush to the orthodontist with them was not fun. And Shlepping to Boro Park to an OBGYN was also not fun. Our community is growing B”H. We shouldn’t have to shlep elsewhere for this.

“If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor”? The lie of the year – heck, maybe of the decade? Well, Obama”care” messed things up pretty badly for both the consumer and the doctor. You could have asked Dr. Feldman a”h about how much worse it made things for him, for example; why, he would have closed up shop long ago, we’re it not for the fact that the Rebbe had told him many years earlier to never quit.

Dr. Feldman did a tremendous about of free work. Whatever kind of insurance you had (or didn’t have) he saw you. No new young doctor would do that (I’m not saying they should). He was a real tzadik and economically made zero sense for him to stay open. Anyone in healthcare knows about the overhead. If a hospital can see 1000 more patients they can afford a staff and build the infrastructure. However, if you see 1000 more patients but only 100 pay, you can not afford to build anything. Dr. Feldman worked to the bone to his dying day.… Read more »

Displaced blame
January 12, 2022 2:24 pm

The insurance companies are to blame. They keep raising premiums and lowering payouts to doctors.

The doctors are getting paid less so they have less leeway where they cannot afford to have idle staff. The inverse of idle staff is waiting patients.

The malpractice insurers are also to blame because they too keep raising doctors’ premiums, cutting further into the doctors’ margins.

Hats off the doctors and staff who work hard to offer you the same level of care or better, while getting paid less to do so.

This is the reason

I call office and doctor speaks to me and orders all needed tests by computer. Then i call back a few days later and speak by phone about the results. Wait for specialist is 2 wks and rarely 3 months. Must better organization in israel

The only way things will change is if the community ensures that their kids have a good secular education so that they can be accepted into medical school. You are absolutely right. And that’s why I did not become a physician. NPs operate in a Nursing Model not a medical model and we treat the Whole Patient. I encourage my patients to bring me their research- provided it is based in science and not in conspiracy theories. I usually have a wait time for a week or two for a new patient. And yes I make House Calls carrying my little black bag. And no I am not new- I have been in practice for over 35 years

If you’re just going to dismiss their concerns as conspiracy theories, and you just want the patients to accept what you say uncritically, then you’re not a nurse or a doctor. You’re a drug pusher.

I agree with Frum NP and I am no drug pusher. That is hilarious- who are the ones asking me to prescribe ivermectin? Who is asking me to prescribe hydrochloriquine? I invite you to tell me also who are the ones asking me to prescribe monoclonal antibodies while they are not in a hospital?

Why, they would be the ones

who have done their research and found that ivermectin does work (see, for one example among many, results from India). As a matter of fact, the recently developed Pfizer drug – why, it uses the same mechanism (protease inhibition) as ivermectin. And so forth. Just because you can’t be bothered to look up anything except what St. Fauci says, doesn’t mean that no one else should either.

Believe me I have looked up plenty- I also hold a Master’s Degree in Pharmacology and Toxicology so I know something about drugs. With few exceptions (such as Bag Balm and Mane and Tail) Veterinary drugs should NOT be used in humans. And no I do NOT agree with everything Dr Faucci says- I have to abide by the CDC regulations, but I don’t have to like them.

Interesting

So apparently you don’t know the simple fact that ivermectin was originally developed and marketed as a human drug. They don’t give Nobel Prizes for veterinary medicines, you know. What other facts are you choosing to overlook?

All the things everyone thinks they “understand” about how these mess work is missing a lot of key info- the research u are seeing is skewed!! ( On all sides)

Well, then, I guess we don’t have a problem with a healthcare shortage in CH since everyone does their research and nobody needs healthcare.

A recently developed Pfizer drug for humans is not a veterinary drug for animals. I do plenty of research because I happen to have a Master’s degree in Pharmacology and Toxicology. With the exception of Bag Balm and Mane and Tail, veterinary drugs should not be used on humans. And no, I do not agree with everything that Dr Faucci says. I have to abide by CDC guidelines but I don’t have to like them.

Monoclonal antibodies have to be given before you are hospitalized not after . So I doubt the person writing this is a doctor

You are correct! My point was that I am not a drug pusher. Monoclonal antibodies are experimental. Please Google the consent form and read it. It says that nothing is guaranteed and it can actually make the patient worse. Most of them are IV except for Regeneron which can be given SQ in 4 injections over a hour. You have to decide the pros and cons and make up you own mind, but I do NOT encourage “pushing drugs “ and I do NOT prescribe that way. And I never said that I was a physician but I do have… Read more »

So important to have more physicians in CH ( Chabad or non Chabad.) Moms who don’t drive ( or can’t afford a vehicle) should be able to have easy access in her neighborhood to hers or her child’s/children’s Dr’s etc…. With minimal waiting time ( unless dr has an immediate emergency.)
Thank you for discussing this here.

Sounds like u never had a nervous breakdown after shlepping a stroller up and down five flights of stairs twice a week while seven months pregnant to take two subways so ur kid could get phsycial therapy (no there are no medical pediatric physical therapists in ch only early intervention) while quitting ur job in order to have enough time to do so.

Are part of the entitlement- doctors in CH “must” attend to everyone and end up backed up- your strep throat is concerning but so is the bed bound patient with CFS

Gratitude
January 12, 2022 11:07 pm

y’all are lacking in gratitude. you do not even comprehend how lucky you are to have access to the community medicine you do. you even have a dedicated physician working until midnight two nights a week for decades just to see everyone on his schedule, he even makes house calls like it’s 1970 still, because it’s good medicine! do you think he gets paid for a 60+min visit with each patient? HA! medicare/medcaid reimburse for 15min max. and everyone here is on Medicaid (socialized medicine), so you’re not even paying for the medical care you receive and yet you expect… Read more »

If a doctor opened a practice for which he charged $300 for the visit, did not accept insurance, and appointments would be timely, would you go? That’s the necessary model. And for those who can’t afford $300 there’s the current model.

Exactly

Coach Fare vs. 1st Class

My father, a secular, ultra-liberal Jew and a physician in family medicine, believed that socialized medicine was “the answer.”

Until he actually had to practice it.

He was required to see a certain number of patients to maintain profits. He came home bitter & exhausted, complaining, “People want coach fare but first class service.”

He died bitter and disillusioned.

Just an idea

Mere blocks from the heart of CH is Kings County Hospital. I work there. We have an enormous clinic with practically every specialty under the sun. Most of the doctors are graduates of SUNY (right across the street) and are incredibly talented. We also have bright residents from medical schools all across the US. Our chiefs of service are also highly accomplished in their fields. We have NP’s and PA’s too. We have pretty much every diagnostic test available under one roof from lab work to MRI. Think of a medical specialty….we’ve most likely got it. And if we don’t,… Read more »

If only college was not discouraged
January 13, 2022 12:09 am

I find this op-ed hilarious. As a current frum NP who went through the chabad “system” where college was frowned on… is it any wonder how there is an artificial shortage of medical professionals? Perhaps the yeshivas should start encouraging college, and that shlichus (while very admirable) is not the only/best way to serve Hashem.

I think you’re missing the point. The author wants more doctors in the neighborhood. She’s not asking for more Chabad doctors. We are very happy with Dr.’s Plaut, Samra, Horowitz, Issoroff…etc. They are not Chabad and we love them all. They are just not enough and the author wants to see more doctors, orthodontists, OBGYN’s…etc but would be perfectly happy with whoever they are, just have an office in CH so she doesn’t have to run with 9 kids out of the neighborhood for each appointment, or wait for hours in the current CH offices that cannot handle our growing… Read more »

And these magical medical professionals should come from where? They have to be grown from within. I don’t see medical professionals running to crown heights to open a practice, unless they have been born/raised or married to a local crown heightser!

Maybe a better request would be from Hashem to make it that we do not need doctors !!!!

Our entire system is set up an away so that we don’t go to college and walk away with a degree (not that there is anything wrong with the that) girls walk out of seminary at age 20-21 guys after Simcha 22-23 To start medical school after that would mean you’re done At 30 and medical school is one of the most demanding and challenging things to undertake so no dating/shidduchim till you 30 even then you work night and Shabbos shifts in a hospital for 2 years so basically not really gonna happen unless it’s actively encourage to pursue/not… Read more »

It all depends upon how badly one wants something. I went to Grad School when my twins were 3yrs old and I also worked full time. And I had a classmate who was 78. If you want something badly enough, you will do anything to get it.

spot on!

If you want more community doctors, MAKE them
January 13, 2022 8:15 pm

If you want more doctors in Crown Heights, provide a secular education for your children, encourage them to go to university and train to be doctors or anything else they want to be. If you want more community doctors, MAKE them.

A little tone deaf, being as doctor offices and hospitals NATIONWIDE are exploding from the sheer volume of patients due to Omicron this past month. Believe in COVID or not, ask anyone working in an office and they will tell you they are overworked with crazy shifts and way too many patients per provider.

Not saying your point isn’t correct, just that this isn’t really the right week to bring it up.

Crucial!!

bottom line
January 18, 2022 3:57 pm

Bottom line….we need more doctors – be it Chabad or anyone else. We are Ka”h a large, growing community and we are still with the same practitioners as 30 years ago. (Even less, not that Dr. Feldman passed away). Time to open new offices with more doctors of all types!

Keeping staff small and costs small
January 28, 2022 9:46 am

Many of the doctors offices would greatly benefit from more medical staff (doctors, nurses, PAs, etc) but they are hiring a skeleton crew. This is the business model. I am a young mother and an RN with great experience and every office said that while I was clearly qualified they “didn’t have any open positions.” At the height of the pandemic!! You wait for an appointment, wait on hold, Wait in the waiting room, wait inside the room…there is a need but they aren’t hiring. I get that their profit margins must be small and personnel is expensive but this… Read more »
