I do not understand why a “Jewish custom” to eat an oily food such as a doughnut or a latkeh needs a defense? How is it different then a meat krepel erev Y”K or a bowl of cholent on Shabbos? If its a Jewish custom then it shouldn’t fall into the category of stuffing your self outlined in Tanya. Is the issue here multiple Doughnuts? I am not sure Rabbi Jacobson needed to take the roundabout route that its essentially wrong but it has redeeming qualities because you might be craving the sparks….
