Rabbi Shaya and Mushky Gourarie (nee Mishulovin) have been recently appointed to establish a new Chabad Center in the picturesque town of Worthing, England serving Jewish families across West Sussex County on the English Channel coast.
The Gouraries were appointed by Chabad of Brighton Head Shliach Rabbi Pesach and Penina Efune.
Even before moving, Rabbi Gourarie flew over to England to oversee Chanukah Mivtzoim in Worthing and neighboring towns, culminating in a grand menorah lighting on Tuesday, the 3rd night of Chanukah at the Worthing Town Hall.
“There were more than 100 people present, from Worthing and the surrounding areas, including Worthing Mayor Henna Chowdhury. She and Rabbi Gourarie both spoke to the assembled crowd,” reports Elaine Hammond of the Worthing Herald.
Mayor Chowdhury lit the Shamosh and spoke of how proud she was that her town “finally” got a Menorah lighting, and pledged support for Chabad and the Jewish community.
Rabbi Shaya Gourarie said, “The Chanukah Menorah symbolizes the power of light. Tonight we announce the opening of a “lighthouse” – Chabad House to bring the light of Judaism, the light of Torah to every Jewish home in Worthing. In a couple of weeks my family and I will be moving to Worthing and will open the first permanent Jewish centre.”
The crowd gathered, hearing about the establishment of Chabad for the first time, were excited and overjoyed. Many Jewish Worthing residents who have relocated from London, Brighton and other larger Jewish communities and were connected with a shul, were feeling the lack of organized Jewish life, and are happy to have that opportunity again.
Rabbi Shaya and Mushky with their children Rivka and Mendel will be moving to Worthing in a few weeks.
