It is the moments of unexpected kindness and support that often leave the most profound impact on our lives. These instances reveal the true character of individuals and highlight the values they hold dear. The memory of Rabbi Akiva Wagner, a beloved mentor and guide, is adorned with countless such instances that manifest his unwavering dedication to his Talmidim and the principles of Chinuch.
One particular story, set against the backdrop of the festive season of Chanukah, perfectly captures Rabbi Wagner’s unique approach to nurturing young minds and his commitment to the cause of spreading light in the world.
A few years back, before there was a Shliach in downtown Toronto, a group of enthusiastic yeshiva Bochurim sought to place a large menorah in the bustling Eaton Center. Their mission was to run mivtzoim activities and engage the public in the celebration of Chanukah.
Upon seeking permission for their initiative, Rabbi Wagner granted them two hours each day to spend at the menorah. His faith in their endeavor was a testament to his belief in the transformative power of young minds guided by the principles of Torah.
However, in their youthful zeal, the bochurim ended up spending more time at the menorah than initially agreed upon. When this came to Rabbi Wagner’s notice, he summoned them all for a conversation. A wave of apprehension washed over the bochurim as they entered the Rosh Yehiva’s office.
As anticipated, Rabbi Wagner gently reprimanded them for not adhering to the agreed-upon schedule. His words were not harsh or punishing, but rather reflected a caring concern for the balance between their limud hatorah and their outreach activities.
But the meeting did not end there. Just as the Bochurim thought they were dismissed, Rabbi Wagner did something extraordinary. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a check, saying, “This is my participation in your activity.” The check was made out for the significant sum of $1,000.
The act was profound and deeply touching. Despite having just admonished the Bochurim, Rabbi Wagner was quick to show his unwavering support and encouragement for their efforts to spread the light of Chanukah. His action was a testament to his deep commitment to chinuch and his belief in the importance of instilling a sense of responsibility and love for Yiddishkeit in the younger generation.
Today, as we remember Rabbi Wagner and his selfless dedication to his Talmidim, we have an opportunity to honor his legacy. A fund has been established to secure the financial future of Rabbi Wagner’s family, who are now facing life’s challenges without their beloved patriarch.
We invite you to join us in this act of Hakaras Hatov, acknowledging and repaying the kindness that Rabbi Wagner demonstrated throughout his life.
